Over 60 local delegates and 30 overseas delegates from six different regions gathered at CityU from 1-5 December to attend the Asian Students Conference, under the theme "Generation-in-Transition" This is the first time local university students have organized such a conference.

In the morning, I was awakened by a cock crowing, instead of the annoying buzzing sound of my alarm clock. The air that I breathed was fresh and clean, unpolluted. There were no skyscrapers, so I had a panoramic view of the sky. I could also enjoy delicious, organically grown fruits and vegetables.

A student from the Division of Languages, Lai Sau Yin, has been awarded a one-year scholarship from the Mombusho (Education Ministry) of the Japanese Government, to study Japanese language and culture in the Nagoya National University.

Last July, Mr Eric Cheng, Senior Lecturer in the Division of Building Science and Technology, joined the Third China Synergy Programme (CSP) for Outstanding Youth as a Group Mentor. He and a Coordinator worked with 20 mentees in the group, which was one of the 12 groups which participated in the programme.

Six undergraduate students from the Department of Mathematics have won awards in a mainland national contest. The annual contest organized by the China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (CSIAM) in September this year, attracted 3,800 team-entrants from top universities throughout the country. CityU students entered the event as two teams and eventually obtained two awards: a first-class ranking and a second-class ranking.

The CityU Debate Team took the first runners up title in the Inter-Collegiate Putonghua Debate Contest organized by the Radio Television Hong Kong this year. In the final contest held at Shatin New Town Plaza on 11 November, the CityU Team argued against the motion: "Should the Hong Kong Press Council be exempt from libel charges? " The rival team, from Hong Kong Baptist University, won the championship and will later represent Hong Kong in a national debate competition to be held in Shanghai.
