CityUHK showcases cutting-edge innovation and aerospace research excellence with nine booths at InnoCarnival 2026

City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) is participating in InnoCarnival 2026, organised by the Innovation and Technology Commission of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. This year, CityUHK is featuring nine dynamic exhibition booths highlighting its latest research breakthroughs and innovative applications in aerospace technology, marine science, artificial intelligence and deep-tech innovation. The showcase offered the public a firsthand look at CityUHK’s outstanding achievements in advancing scientific innovation and technology transfer.
Two key research projects led by the University are featured in this year’s newly introduced Aerospace Zone at the event. Presenting cutting-edge research outcomes related to national aerospace development, the exhibits underscore the robust capabilities of CityUHK’s research teams in leveraging innovative technology to serve major national strategic needs.
One of the highlighted projects, “High-Fidelity Lunar Regolith Simulant: Laying A Solid Foundation for Lunar Exploration”, led by Professor Li Yangyang from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and Professor Lu Jian, Chair Professor of Department of Mechanical Engineering, focuses on developing high-fidelity lunar regolith simulants. As genuine lunar soil collected from the Moon is extremely scarce and valuable, most lunar exploration research and engineering activities rely on artificial simulants. Through innovative materials synthesis techniques and advanced lunar environment simulation processes, the research team has developed high-fidelity lunar regolith that closely replicates the composition and characteristics of real lunar soil. The project helps address a key technological challenge in lunar exploration and provides important support for lunar resource utilisation, space engineering and deep-space research, paving the way for more accurate lunar exploration studies.

Another displayed aerospace research project, “Watching the Poles from Space: Satellite-Guided Projections of Future Sea-Level Rise and Maritime Access”, is led by Professor Lin Yucheng, Professor Li Xueke and Professor Li Tanghua from CityUHK’s School of Energy and Environment. The project combines satellite observations and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to analyse changes in Antarctic ice-sheet mass and trends in Arctic sea-ice decline. By transforming polar climate data into actionable intelligence, the research provides important decision-making support for coastal city planning, climate adaptation and sustainable shipping. It helps predict future sea-level rise risks and offers new insights into green shipping and maritime development, demonstrating how innovative technologies can be harnessed to address the challenges of climate change.
Beyond the Aerospace Zone, CityUHK is also featuring a dedicated booth for the State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Health, alongside six booths for startups nurtured and supported by HK Tech 300. Spanning green technology, AI, robotics, educational technology and smart sensing, these booths offered HK Tech 300 startups a valuable opportunity to introduce their latest research and development achievements and market-ready solutions to the public, further demonstrating CityUHK’s outstanding accomplishments in promoting knowledge transfer, innovation and entrepreneurship.

CityUHK remains steadfast in advancing interdisciplinary research innovation and technology transfer, actively aligning with the innovation and technology strategies of both the nation and Hong Kong. By taking part in InnoCarnival 2026, CityUHK seeks to highlight the vital role of pioneering research in tackling global issues and improving daily life, while inspiring the younger generation to explore the boundless possibilities of science and innovation.
