City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) has always been committed to developing cutting-edge technology, promoting interdisciplinary research and nurturing future talent with a global perspective. CityUHK recently received a donation pledge of HK$20 million from Global School of Technology & Management (GSTM), a leading academic institution in Singapore, to support academic teaching, research and the cultivation of innovative technology talent at CityUHK’s College of Computing, injecting new momentum into regional technological development.

The cheque presentation ceremony was held on 23 June, co-officiated by Professor Chun-Sing Lee, Acting President of CityUHK, and Mr Liang Bin, Chairman of the Board of Directors of GSTM. CityUHK has received the first instalment of HK$5 million. Representatives from both institutions gathered to witness this important milestone.

"This valuable support represents full recognition of CityUHK's development in education and scientific research. The donation will serve as a vital driving force for us to promote teaching, research and innovation. CityUHK has always upheld its mission of professional education and innovative research. We will make full use of this donation as a cornerstone to support the University's development, benefitting more students, faculty members and research projects," said Professor Lee at the ceremony.

Mr Che Shu-fai, Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of GSTM, stated that the donation aims not only to support CityUHK's technological research and development, but also to express trust and expectations for the youth of both regions, enabling them to pursue their dreams and unleash their potential.

CityUHK established the College of Computing in 2024, which is dedicated to promoting interdisciplinary research, attracting top talent and encouraging the exploration of frontier technologies to drive the economy through innovation and contribute to society. The College aims to support Hong Kong's long-term development in education and technology, helping to realise Hong Kong's vision of becoming an international innovation and technology hub.

The generous donation from GSTM will focus on the long-term academic and research strategic layout of CityUHK's College of Computing. By optimising research hardware and talent cultivation programmes, it aims to create a world-class innovation and technology education ecosystem. A total of HK$15 million of the donation will be used to fund CityUHK's establishment of a new research platform to promote teaching and research in frontier fields such as computer science, artificial intelligence, data science and the application of innovative technologies.

The remaining HK$5 million will be used to establish a dedicated scholarship, "Singapore and Malaysia Computer, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Talent Nurturing Scholarship", which aims to attract outstanding students from Singapore and Malaysia to pursue related programmes at CityUHK's College of Computing, nurturing more technological talent for Southeast Asia and contributing to regional technological advancement.

Since its establishment in 2010, GSTM has actively built a forward-looking educational ecosystem, promoted the development of technology- and management-related disciplines, and actively nurtured high-end talent in data science and AI in Singapore and Malaysia.

This donation not only symbolises the beginning of a deeper collaboration between the two sides, but will also inject new momentum into innovation and technology education in Asia, demonstrating their firm commitment to promoting international collaboration and advancing global technology education.

CityUHK representatives attending the ceremony included Professor Michael Yang Mengsu, Senior Vice-President (Innovation and Enterprise); Miss Maggie Chau, Vice-President (Administration); Professor Jianping Wang, Dean of the College of Computing; Ms Kathy Chan, Associate Vice-President (Development) and Professor Man-kong Chow, Professor of Practice of the Department of Data Science of the College of Computing.
