CityUHK student and alumna honoured at Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards
City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) warmly congratulates student-athlete Baldwin Chan Ho-wah and distinguished alumna Grace Lau Mo-sheung for their outstanding achievements at the Cathay 2025 Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards. The two athletes received top honours in their respective categories, showcasing CityUHK’s success in nurturing sporting talent.
Baldwin, together with his partner Wong Chun-ting, representing Hong Kong, China in men’s doubles table tennis, received the “Hong Kong Sports Stars Award for Sports Combination”. Baldwin delivered remarkable performances in international competitions over the past year, including a historic gold medal in the men’s doubles and a bronze medal in the mixed doubles at the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games. Baldwin and Wong Chun-ting achieved a historic breakthrough by rising to World No. 1 spot in the WTT rankings, demonstrating their exceptional strength and consistency. With superb skills and strong team synergy, the pair continue to inject momentum into the development of table tennis in Hong Kong.
“I am truly honoured to receive this award with my partner,” said Baldwin. “This is great encouragement to both of us as we continue to strive for excellence on the international stage. I am grateful for the unwavering support from CityUHK, which has enabled me to pursue both my academic and athletic goals.”
Baldwin is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Social Sciences at CityUHK and was admitted through the Student-Athlete Learning Support and Admission Scheme. He has consistently maintained a good balance between his academic studies and athletic pursuits, achieving outstanding results in international competitions and exemplifying the perseverance and excellence of CityUHK student-athletes.
Equally inspiring is Grace’s journey in women’s karate, where she was honoured with the “Hong Kong Sports Star Award for Women”, further affirming her remarkable achievements and influence in the international sports arena. She has long excelled in women’s karate, winning numerous awards at the highest level. In 2025, she secured gold medals at The World Games in Chengdu, the World Karate Championships and the Asian Karate Championships, demonstrating her world-class calibre. She previously won bronze medals at The World Games 2022 in Birmingham, Alabama, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and two Asian Games.
“Being selected as an outstanding female athlete for the sixth time is truly hard earned, as each honour never comes easily. This year’s award carries special significance, not only was I chosen as the Asian Champion, but I also earned this recognition through my outstanding performances at the World Games and World Championships. This affirmation makes me immensely proud.’ said Grace. She also expressed gratitude to CityUHK for its continuous support, which has enabled her to steadily advance in her athletic career while striving for excellence.
A graduate of the School of Creative Media at CityUHK, Grace demonstrated exceptional potential during her studies, leading the University team to notable achievements. She has since continued to scale new heights on the international stage and has become one of the most prominent figures in Hong Kong’s sports community.
