CityUHK’s “Tunnel of Future Innovations” wins the leading A&D Awards in Asia Pacific for its innovative design and social impact

Since its opening in May last year, City University of Hong Kong’s (CityUHK) “Tunnel of Future Innovations” has received widespread acclaim for its innovative design concept and artistic features. After winning the “ArtCan Cultural Award” from Sing Tao News Group, the project achieved further recognition by securing the Silver Award in the “Interior Design - Best Education” category at one of the Asia-Pacific region’s most prestigious design competitions—the A&D Awards.
Established in 2004 by leading Asia-Pacific design magazine PERSPECTIVE, the A&D Awards are among the most authoritative and influential accolades in architecture and interior design. The international judging panel comprises seasoned global design experts who evaluate entries based on a comprehensive range of criteria, including overall performance, creativity, functionality, aesthetics, sustainability and social impact, across various categories, such as architecture, interior design, product design and innovation.
The “Tunnel of Future Innovations” serves as the main connection between the CityUHK campus and the neighbouring Festival Walk shopping mall. Its entrance features a 4K touchscreen wall providing interactive campus navigation. The overhead glass ceiling incorporates the CityUHK logo, which extends into 100 metres of LED screens along both sides of the tunnel, creating an immersive digital interactive experience and allowing the space to be flexibly transformed into a multi-purpose exhibition area. The tunnel has been completely revitalised after its refurbishment and has become a popular photo-taking spot for visitors to experience Hong Kong’s innovation culture.
The tunnel regularly showcases creative artworks by CityUHK students and faculty. Most recently, the tunnel collaborated for the first time with a local visual artist to present a large-scale digital artwork titled “My Neighbourhood, My CityUHK”. The artwork blends digital elements with local culture, highlighting the University’s commitment to community care and support, and enabling creativity and culture to flow between the campus and the surrounding neighbourhood.
QUAD served as the Design and Build consultant for the project, providing valuable expertise on design details and construction feasibility, ultimately transforming the tunnel into a new landmark that seamlessly integrates technology and art.
