CityUHK showcases campus vibrancy in Student Carnival 2026
City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) held its Student Carnival 2026 on 23 January at University Circle and Wong’s International Terrace, offering students and staff a refreshing break from their busy schedules. The evening featured a rich programme of cultural performances, games and food stalls, showcasing the vibrancy and diversity of campus life while further strengthening the cohesion of the CityUHK community.
The Opening Ceremony was officiated by Professor Lee Chun-sing, Provost and Deputy President, Professor Chan Chi-hou, Vice-President (Community Engagement), Professor Alex Wong Chun-yin, Dean of Students, and Bhavesh Shabu Nair and Kam Long-tsit Fornia, two student representatives.
In his remarks, Professor Lee emphasised that CityUHK is far more than an institution of academic learning; it also aspires to be a dynamic hub of innovation and a nurturing environment for independent minds. He said: “Beyond academics, CityUHK provides students with rich opportunities to shine. Tonight’s Carnival beautifully embodies these values, as students from all corners of the globe take to the stage to showcase their unique talents through a variety of captivating performances. These showcases are not merely entertainment; they represent mutual exchange, respect and harmony, vividly illustrating the inclusiveness and unity at the heart of CityUHK.”

In the recent Student Learning Experience Survey, CityUHK students expressed high satisfaction in multiple areas, particularly in global learning experiences. This reinforces CityUHK’s recognition by Times Higher Education as the “Most International University in the World” for two consecutive years. This honour highlights CityUHK’s commitment to fostering a multicultural campus environment through cultural activities and exchanges, enabling students to engage with peers from diverse backgrounds, build mutual understanding and develop essential cross-cultural communication skills – key components for nurturing a truly global mindset.

The stage performances by students and alumni were full of highlights. The CityUHK Philharmonic Orchestra opened with a stirring musical performance, followed by freestyle football, diabolo, dance, magic and band shows. Cross-cultural showcases also captivated the audience, including African drum and fashion performances, and a unique collaboration between the Dancing Society and the Lion Dance Club. The finale featured DJ Heartgrey with a live DJ and Beatbox set, bringing the atmosphere to its peak.

Offstage, the excitement continued with over 20 student-led game booths and food kiosks organised by the Student Residence Office, Global Engagement Office, Student Development Services and CityUHK’s caterers. Balloon twisting, photo booths and popcorn machines added to the festive spirit.
The Carnival attracted a large turnout of students, creating a lively and joyful atmosphere. More than just a celebration, the Student Carnival highlighted the creativity and talent of CityUHK students, promoted cross-cultural exchange and embodied CityUHK’s spirit of diversity, inclusiveness and innovation.
