In the recent released “Nature Index 2025 Young Universities” rankings, City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) ranked 4th among 200 universities worldwide aged 50 or under, claiming the top spot in Hong Kong. This international recognition reflects CityUHK’s commitment to promoting innovative interdisciplinary research, expanding the international horizons of its faculty and students, and creating a vibrant and international campus environment.

CityUHK secured the top position in Hong Kong in both the overall ranking and several sub-rankings. It ranked fourth in the “Leading 200 Young Universities”, third in the “Top 25 Rising Young Universities”, and fourth and fifth in the fields of physical sciences and chemistry, respectively – an outstanding achievement.

The Nature Index Young Universities Supplement ranked universities aged 50 or under on their article count and share in 145 of the most influential academic journals in natural sciences and health sciences between 2020 and 2024. Journals include the Nature series, Science and Cell.

CityUHK’s academic excellence and research capabilities have earned widespread recognition across the globe. It also achieved outstanding results in the Nature Index and its Energy Supplement’s “2025 Research Leaders: Leading Institutions”, “Leading 200 Institutions” and “Top 50 Rising Institutions”, ranking first in Hong Kong in all three. This reflects the University’s active promotion of innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration, as well as its leading position in high-quality research output, outstanding research capabilities and international academic influence.

In addition, 29 scholars from CityUHK were named Highly Cited Researchers 2025 by Clarivate, placing the University ninth in Asia and second in Hong Kong. In terms of faculty size, CityUHK leads Hong Kong in the proportion of the world’s most Highly Cited Researchers for the tenth consecutive year, reflecting the exceptional calibre of CityUHK’s teaching and research teams and their sustained impact on the academic world.
