CityUHK scholar elected to the prestigious US National Academy of Artificial Intelligence
Professor Li Wen Jung, Vice-President (Talent and International Strategy) and Chair Professor of Biomedical Engineering in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK), has been elected as a Member of the US National Academy of Artificial Intelligence (NAAI), in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI).
Professor Li is recognised for transformative contributions to smart micro‑nano systems, wearable biomedical devices, and AI‑powered, sensor‑based motion analytics. These advances align with the NAAI’s mission to promote AI excellence in intelligent sensing and biomedical robotics. His interdisciplinary work continues to push the boundaries of engineering, AI and biomedical technology.
Internationally regarded for pioneering research in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), nanosensors, and AI‑powered motion analytics leveraging solid‑state and electronic‑skin sensors, Professor Li also leads initiatives in AI‑driven sensing and actively drives the translation of research into impactful technologies. He holds more than 25 patents across the United States, European Union, and China in micro/nano technologies and AI‑sensor‑based motion analytics and has supported his students in founding four start-ups commercialising smart sensor systems over the past two decades.
Professor Li’s achievements have earned broad recognition, including Fellowships of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and the Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association (AAIA). He was also selected for the “100 Talents Programme” of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the “National Thousand Talents Programme”. He actively promotes international professional exchange, has served as the President of the IEEE Nanotechnology Council, and has led the organisation of numerous internationally renowned academic conferences.
As a newly inducted member of the NAAI, Professor Li joins a distinguished community of world-renowned pioneers in AI and machine-learning. Among the other elected members are founders and distinguished experts from major AI companies such as NVIDIA, OpenAI and Meta, alongside eminent professors from top-tier universities including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, the University of California, Berkeley, and Princeton University.
The NAAI unites leading scientists and engineers to advance AI development, foster international technological collaboration and academic exchange, and enhance public understanding of AI applications and their ethical implications. Membership is conferred through a rigorous election process, reflecting international peer recognition of scholarly excellence and societal impact.
Professor Li’s election to the NAAI not only highlights his outstanding academic achievements but also underscores CityUHK’s commitment to advancing world-class research and nurturing global leaders in science, engineering and AI.
