CityUHK’s two State Key Laboratories presented with plaques: promoting Hong Kong's integration into the country's scientific advancement
The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) today hosted a Plaque Presentation Ceremony, during which the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China presented plaques to 15 State Key Laboratories in Hong Kong. Two of the State Key Laboratories are hosted by City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK): the State Key Laboratory of Terahertz and Millimeter Waves (SKLTMW) and the State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Health (SKMEH). This acknowledgment underscores CityUHK’s academic and research excellence, positioning it as a significant contributor to Hong Kong’s integration into the country’s scientific advancement.
Professor Freddy Boey, President and University Distinguished Professor of CityUHK, expressed pride in this recognition, stating that having two State Key Laboratories hosted by CityUHK reflects the nation’s strong endorsement of the University’s research and innovation capabilities. He added that building on its achievement as the “Most International University in the World” for the second consecutive year, CityUHK will continue to advance international education and research collaboration, attracting top academic talent from around the world to support the academic and innovation ecosystems in the country.
He also highlighted CityUHK’s commitment to deepening comprehensive collaboration with mainland China. The University has established enhanced partnerships with several prominent mainland universities and set up research institutes and innovation centres in Shenzhen, Futian, Chengdu, Qingdao, Changsha and Hangzhou. These initiatives aim to enhance cooperation in talent development, innovation and entrepreneurship, technology transfer, and the commercialisation of research outcomes, leveraging CityUHK’s research prowess and international outlook to drive industry-academia-research synergy between mainland China and Hong Kong.
The SKLTMW, led by Professor Chan Chi-hou, Vice-President (Community Engagement) and Chair Professor of Electronic Engineering, was established in 2008. The laboratory focuses on advancing the development of 6G wireless communications through cutting-edge research and interdisciplinary collaboration in areas such as antennas, chips, imaging, microwave photonics, integrated sensing and communication, and optoelectronic materials and devices.
The SKMEH (formerly known as the SKL of Marine Pollution), led by Professor Leung Mei-yee, Associate Dean of the College of Science and Chair Professor of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry, was founded in 2010. The laboratory focuses on monitoring and managing emerging pollutants, assessing and restoring marine ecological health, enhancing biodiversity conservation, and supporting ecological civilisation and sustainable blue economy development.
