African alumni reconnect at CityUHK and embrace the inclusive spirit

African alumni gather at the iconic campus entrance “Tunnel of Future Innovations”, marking a memorable reunion at their alma mater.

City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) is committed to fostering a globally connected and inclusive alumni network. On 16 May, CityUHK hosted its first African alumni gathering, welcoming African alumni residing in Hong Kong back to the campus for a warm and heartfelt reunion.

Professor Freddy Boey, CityUHK President and University Distinguished Professor, delivered a speech at the gathering. He highlighted CityUHK’s commitment to multicultural development and its efforts to attract top talent from around the world. He emphasised the importance of diversity in shaping a richer and more innovative learning environment. He encouraged alumni to stay engaged with the University, share their insights, and continue to contribute to CityUHK’s development.

Dr Sally Mingle Yorke (PhD in Accountancy) and her husband, Dr Emmanuel Koomson (PhD in Biomedical Sciences), were deeply moved to return to their alma mater for the reunion. Over the years, the couple has actively participated in alumni events in Hong Kong, Singapore and Beijing, demonstrating a strong sense of belonging and support for the University. “CityUHK is our home away from home, and we would love to follow CityUHK as far as we can,” they said.

Several alumni shared their professional development stories in Hong Kong. Dr Stanley Isangha (PhD in Social and Behavioural Sciences) is a counselling professional, whose research focuses on health psychology and social work. Bridging cultural gaps, he coaches counsellors who work with ethnic minority groups in Hong Kong.

CityUHK will continue to strengthen its ties with its African alumni and expand its global alumni community, uniting CityUHK graduates to support the University's pursuit of international excellence.

The event was coordinated by the Alumni Relations Office (ARO). CityUHK representatives in attendance included Ms Ng Pheck Choo, Senior Director of the Office of the President and Director of the Global Engagement Office; Ms Grace Liang, Director of the ARO; Ms Pheony Tsang, Deputy Director of the ARO; and Ms Joyce Siu, Associate Director of the ARO.
