Exchange fund is a mind opener

CityU's Student Exchange Fund, formally established this financial year following a three-year pilot scheme, has been warmly received and is expected to enrich students beyond their academic pursuits.

'Reading a thousand books is not nearly as useful as walking a thousand miles," said Vice President (Institutional Advancement) Professor Y S Wong, quoting an old Chinese saying. "The unique experience in studying and living overseas can broaden students' international vision, prompting their overall growth," he said, adding that the University would strive to create such opportunities for students.

In 2002-03, the Student Exchange Fund will sponsor 99 CityU students in credit-bearing exchange programmes offered outside Hong Kong at the undergraduate or associate degree level, usually on a semester-long basis.

Since it initiated student exchange activities in 1996, the University has successfully built links with 25 internationally renowned institutions. To date, about 400 students from CityU and from abroad have taken advantage of the programme.

Applicants must acquire a grade point average (GPA) of over 3.0 and at least 550 in TOEFL, or meet the standards set by individual institutions. Programme sponsorship may cover the whole or part of any return economy-class air ticket, as well as local room and board, while tuition fees are normally exempted by the host university. Interested students may contact the Academic Exchange Office or their own department office for details.
