Introduction:
Choe Chi-won (최치원, 崔致遠) , an influential Korean featured in this proposed project, has many surviving texts, including a large collection of poetry. Born in Korea in 857, Choe Chi-won went on to study in China, serve as a Tang Dynasty official in Yangzhou, and was even recognised for his service in helping resist a rebellion uprising against the Emperor Xizong of Tang. In later life, Choe Chi-won focused more greatly on scholarly pursuits and Confucianism, and had works published in both China and Korea. Six poems created by Choe Chi-won will be introduced. This documentary covers the introduction of Choe Chi-won’s six poems and its interpretation of the new generation. As shown from the textual differences in current versions, Choe Chi-won’s role as a cultural connection between Korea and China was very important. However, his poems are considerably forgotten by the new generation. Thus, through the documentary, we would like to show its importance as literature that young generations can deeply sympathize with. The aims of this project are to promote social awareness of the cultural traditions of Korea and China and thousands of years of cultural exchange.

Lighthouse Memories: Waglan Island Lighthouse (Putonghua)

Lights in Time: The S.S. Bokhara & The Fisher Island Lighthouse (English)

On the 8th of October 1892, the Peninsula & Oriental Steam Navigation Company's S.S. Bokhara left Shanghai for Hong Kong. Two days later, after a battle with an ill-fated typhoon, she sank beneath the Penghu Islands within minutes of hitting the reefs along the isle. What happened next were events leading to a rare moment of humanity and solidarity between East and West relations, as the Bokhara survivors returned to Hong Kong safely with the assistance from the Fisher Island Lighthouse.

Run Run Shaw Library's Lighthouse Heritage Research Connections (LHRC) programme illustrates the events that took place before and after the Bokhara's wreck in 1892. Join City University of Hong Kong's LHRC team in the epic story of the search for the missing steamship and its aftermath in Hong Kong and the Penghu Islands.

Triangular Island Goddess of Tin Hau Shrine of Peace

Since the Song Dynasty, fishermen from Chaozhou, Shantou and Hakka has long worshipped the Chinese Goddess of the Sea, Tin Hau. As Hong Kong was once a fishing village, it forms a huge part of our's heritage. In 2009, UNESCO included the tradition in its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It is evident that Tin Hau plays not only a vital role in fishermen's lives but also Hong Kong's cultural diversity.
Fishermen believe Tin Hau can ensure them a safe and smooth journey. She passed away while trying to save her father and brother from a sinking boat. Fishermen believed she became a goddess and since then many had reported seeing Tin Hau appearing to sailors in danger and leading them to safety. Therefore, they always worship Tin Hau before sail. The boat is a popular temple of choice on which a lot of fishermen pray for safety and peace for their families.
The temple will "go ashore". The distinctive boat will then retire and become a symbol of our maritime history and memories.
