Research Overview
Department of Biomedical Engineering
Biomedical engineering is a multidisciplinary field that addresses complex medical and biological problems through innovative technological solutions. The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) at the City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) combines engineering and medicine to advance human health. Our goal is to train the next generation of biomedical engineers with a solid foundation in human biology and engineering principles. There are five core research areas: (1) Bio-microelectromechanical systems (BioMEMS), developing microscale tools for cellular and molecular diagnostics to enable precision medicine; (2) Bioimaging, developing advanced technologies for high-resolution, multiscale imaging of biological systems at different levels; (3) Flexible bioelectronics, designing wearable and implantable biocompatible devices for disease diagnosis, treatment and monitoring; (4) Biomedical robotics, engineering smart surgical, rehabilitation and prosthetic systems that combine artificial intelligence with biomechanics; and (5) Nanomedicine, developing nanomaterials for molecular diagnostics, targeted drug delivery and disease treatment. CityUHK BME is committed to fostering close collaboration between researchers, clinicians and industry partners to ensure effective translation of technologies from the bench to the bedside. Through cutting-edge multidisciplinary research, innovation and forward-thinking education, we are committed to shaping the future of healthcare and training young talents to drive meaningful medical breakthroughs.
Department of Biomedical Sciences
Department of Biomedical Sciences (BMS) aims to establish itself as a leading center for biomedical education and pioneering research. Our primary focus areas include cancer biology and therapy, genomics and bioinformatics, vascular, metabolic, and regenerative biology, as well as infectious diseases and immunity. We are committed to providing state-of-the-art technology and a supportive environment that fosters independent thinking, creativity, practical skills, and problem-solving abilities for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. This approach prepares our students to meet the challenges of a modern knowledge-based economy and contribute meaningfully to society. Furthermore, we strive to conduct internationally competitive research and promote interdisciplinary collaborations to uncover fundamental biological processes, translating our discoveries into innovative diagnostics and therapeutics for human diseases.
Department of Neuroscience
The Department of Neuroscience offers an exceptional research environment, featuring innovative scientists engaged in a diverse array of topics. Our interdisciplinary approach leverages the strengths of CityUHK in biology, veterinary medicine, engineering, chemistry, and computer science. This dynamic intellectual atmosphere fosters the fearless exploration of critical neuroscience questions and actively seeks translational opportunities that benefit society. Neuroscience is entering an extraordinary era for translating fundamental discoveries into impactful medical innovations. Recent advances in understanding the pathophysiology of debilitating diseases such as stroke, dementia, and Parkinson's disease pave the way for novel therapeutic discoveries. These opportunities include a scientific exploration of the various neurological conditions resulting from genetic abnormalities.
