Student Exchange Sharing
Host Institution: Radboud University Nijmegen, Netherlands (Semester B 2024/25)
Hello, I am TONG Kai Kwan (KK), a third-year student majoring in biomedical engineering. For the
past six months, I have resided in Boeckstaetehof Nijmegen, a city located on the south-eastern border of
the Netherlands. This exchange marked my first venture into Europe due to financial constraints. The
opportunity to embark on a semester abroad in Europe has been a longstanding aspiration since my
enrollment at City University, and I am appreciative that this dream has materialized with the unwavering
support of my teachers, department, and institution.
Admittedly, the initial month upon my arrival proved to be quite challenging. Reality did not
mirror the idealistic image I had painted in my mind. Coping with a demanding academic workload,
navigating unfamiliar dining customs, and the absence of my familiar social circle left me feeling
overwhelmed, prompting me to question the rationale behind my decision to venture abroad. However, life
does not pause for contemplation; it propels you forward. As time progressed, I began to admire the Dutch
students' dedication to their studies amidst healthy competition, adhered to my calorie-deficit meal plan
despite its blandness, forged meaningful bonds with my roommates, and even embarked on a memorable trip to
Tromso. In a moment of clarity, I recognized that the obstacles I encountered were not hindrances but
rather challenges I had long yearned to confront, motivating me to click the exchange programme
application button.
To those who are deliberating the merits and drawbacks of studying abroad, I can attest that this
experience has etched indelible memories in my academic journey and life as a whole. Make a firm decision
and approach this opportunity with an open mind, embracing every potentiality. The essence of exchange
life is a flavor you can never savor once you have embarked on your professional career!
