Student Exchange Sharing
Host Institution: KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden (Semester B 2024/25)
My name is LIU Chang, and I am majoring in biomedical engineering. Last semester, I embarked on an
exchange programme at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden, focusing on courses offered by the
School of Engineering Science in Biotechnology.
As an engineering student, expanding our perspectives is a crucial part of our educational
journey. The exchange programme provided me with a valuable opportunity to observe how biomedical
engineering is approached in Europe. Given that I was required to enroll in Master’s Degree level courses
during the exchange, I encountered a wealth of unfamiliar knowledge that demanded self-directed learning.
Initially, I assumed the courses would mirror those in Hong Kong. However, KTH presented a stark
contrast. Beyond traditional lectures, each course emphasized the integration of theoretical knowledge
with cutting-edge technologies, encouraging us to formulate our own innovative ideas. This experience
underscored the essence of engineering—to transform acquired knowledge into tangible products or
prototypes, rather than merely mastering theoretical concepts.
Regarding the social milieu in Sweden, individuals tend to lean towards introversion.
Nevertheless, by taking a proactive approach, one can forge meaningful connections and establish
friendships. The exchange programme not only provided a glimpse into a distinct learning environment but
also serves as a valuable reference point for selecting future destinations for pursuing a Master’s
degree.
