CBM Seminar Series – Medical Devices Empower Aggregation Induced Emission Luminogens for Biosensing: From Design to Clinical Evaluation

21 September 2026

The College of Biomedicine was honored to host Professor Youhong TANG, Tenured Professor of Intelligent Manufacturing at Southern University of Science and Technology, Shenzhen, China, as a distinguished speaker for the CBM Seminar Series on 21 September 2026. Professor Tang previously served as the Matthew Flinders Professor of Engineering at Flinders University, Australia, and is internationally recognized for his pioneering contributions to chemo/biosensors and portable sensing devices based on aggregation induced emission (AIE) materials.

In his lecture entitled "Medical Devices Empower Aggregation Induced Emission Luminogens for Biosensing: From Design to Clinical Evaluation", Professor Tang presented three case studies demonstrating the development of medical devices incorporating AIE luminogens. He highlighted: (1) a point of care device for monitoring human serum albumin in urine, supported by clinical trial data and machine learning models for chronic and diabetic kidney disease monitoring; (2) a metasurface device engineered to interface with AIEgens, enabling high throughput biomarker screening with enhanced sensitivity; and (3) a portable vortex fluidic device (p VFD) for accelerated detection of neurodegenerative markers such as p75ECD, which can be used to assess prognosis, disease severity, and progression in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and be yond.

The seminar stimulated engaging discussion among faculty, researchers, and students, underscoring the translational potential of AIE based medical devices in advancing biosensing technologies from laboratory design to clinical evaluation. Professor Tang's lecture showcased how interdisciplinary innovation in materials science and device engineering can drive impactful progress in biomedical diagnostics and healthcare.
