We are delighted to share that Prof. Zongli Zheng from the Department of Biomedical Sciences (BMS) at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) has received the CityUHK Presidential Research Excellence Award for Junior Faculty, in recognition of his outstanding research achievements and contributions to genomic medicine.
This prestigious honour reflects CityUHK’s commitment to fostering research excellence and recognising scholars whose innovative work advances scientific knowledge and creates meaningful societal impact. The award celebrates exceptional achievements by junior faculty members and their contributions to the University’s research development.
Prof. Zheng specialises in gene rearrangement, precision genome editing and liquid biopsy. His research focuses on developing innovative genome-editing therapies using a “DNA surgery” approach to correct defective genes. In 2025, he secured funding under the HKSAR Government’s Research, Academic and Industry Sectors One-plus Scheme (RAISe+) to develop two drug candidates for rare genetic liver and cardiovascular diseases, which are now being prepared for clinical trials.
Upon receiving the award, Prof. Zheng expressed his gratitude and dedicated the recognition to his research and development team. He reaffirmed their commitment to advancing genomic medicine and developing affordable, one-time treatments for diseases with unmet medical needs.
The CityUHK Presidential Research Excellence Award Ceremony was held on 2 October 2026, honouring five distinguished scholars for their exceptional research achievements across various disciplines. Further coverage can be found on the University’s NewsCentre website.
Please join us in congratulating Prof. Zheng on this remarkable achievement and well-deserved recognition!
