Professor Wang Xun-Li received the Lee Hsun Lecture Award from Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences

Professor Wang Xun-Li, Head of Department, received the Lee Hsun Lecture Award from the Institute of Metal Research (IMR), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

The Award honors scientists who have made great contribution to the field of materials science and engineering with significant impact.  It aims to encourage scientists with notable influence on the field to visit IMR to enhance academic communication and cooperation, and to promote the establishment of new subject areas.

Professor Wang presented the lecture, titled "Microscopic Insights of Mechanical Behaviors from Neutron Diffraction Measurements", during his visit to IMR from October 18 to 20, 2018.

Neutron scattering is a powerful method for characterizing the mechanical behaviours of materials.  In his lecture, Professor Wang used several examples, from residual stress mapping in welds to in-situ loading studies of nanostructured and metallic glass alloys, to illustrate how this technique is used to gain microscopic insights of mechanical behaviours in engineering materials. His team has recently applied in-situ neutron diffraction measurements to study deformation mechanisms in high entropy alloys at 10 K, and the findings have aroused widespread interest among researchers.
