CityU Physics Hosts Prestigious 2024 APS March Meeting in Hong Kong

CityU Physics has made history by hosting the 2024 American Physical Society (APS) March Meeting satellite conference from March 3rd to 8th. This marks the first time the renowned event has a section being held in Hong Kong, providing a unique platform for physicists to showcase their research and foster international collaborations.

The conference, organized in collaboration with the Physical Society of Hong Kong and APS, aimed to bridge the gap in academic exchanges between China and the United States, which had been hindered since the pandemic. The hybrid format of the event allowed for simultaneous broadcasting of select presentations between Hong Kong and the APS online platform, ensuring that participants unable to travel to the US could still engage fully.

With a focus on cutting-edge topics such as atomic, molecular, and optical physics, and quantum physics, the conference attracted around 100 attendees. The CityU campus buzzed with excitement as scholars from around the region gathered to share their latest findings and insights.

The opening ceremony was graced by the presence of Professor Enge Wang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and an esteemed theoretical physicist, who gave opening remarks. One of the highlights of the conference was the session held on March 8th, which featured invited talks broadcasted live to the APS March Meeting online platform. Topics ranged from quantum reservoir computing and exciton-vibrational energy dissipation in photosynthesis to the Meissner effect in Majorana zero modes and thermal transport in altermagnets.

Other notable speakers included Professor Xiaopeng Li from Fudan University, Professor Yuxiang Weng from the Institute of Physics, Professor Xin Liu from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Professor Wanxiang Feng from Beijing Institute of Technology, among others. Their contributions further enriched the discussions and fostered a deeper understanding of various physics phenomena.

The event provided a valuable opportunity for the local and international physics community to come together, exchange ideas, and explore potential collaborations. The success of the 2024 APS March Meeting in Hong Kong underscores CityU's growing prominence as a hub for scientific research and innovation.
