Soft Matter and Biophysics

Soft materials are fascinating physical systems that can easily be deformed or structurally altered by thermal fluctuations or external forces resulting interesting physical phenomena. Their predominant physical behaviours can be altered at an energy scale comparable with room temperature thermal energy. Soft matters include liquids, colloids, polymers, foams, gels, granular materials, liquid crystals, and biological materials. Structurally, these systems are intermediate in size between atoms and crystal grains.

Biophysics is an interdisciplinary science that study physical phenomena and physical processes in living beings, which include molecules, cells, tissues and organisms. As a bridge between biology and physics, a biophysicist is looking for the physical mechanisms in living things and understanding them with the principles of physics to gain more insights into the complexity of life.
