Programme Aims and Objectives

Programme Aims

    1. To provide a professional education in the discipline of health sciences and biomedicine;

    2. To upgrade existing biomedical studies’ graduates with the knowledge in health sciences and biomedicine;

    3. To prepare students with academic knowledge to become managers and engineers of pharmaceutical companies and health related organisations, and scientists or technicians in different research areas in life sciences and health related fields.

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs)

  • Acquire essential concepts and knowledge of advanced health sciences and biomedicine as well as across the boundaries of interdisciplinary disciplines;

  • Develop empathy and social responsibility, moral sensibility, critical thinking, sustained interest and management skills in healthcare and biomedicine, such as ageing, chronic diseases, etc.;

  • Apply specialized knowledge to manage and/or solve problems that are critical to future growth of industry, business and social service in government-oriented and non-government organizations;

  • Manage skillfully and work effectively with people possessing diverse educational and experiential backgrounds; and

  • Apply interdisciplinary knowledge to develop abilities for the increasingly competitive and dynamically changing world market

Entrance Requirements

General Entrance Requirements

Applicants must satisfy the University's general entrance requirements and the following programme-specific entrance requirements:

  • Possess a recognized undergraduate degree in Biology/Bioengineering/Biomedical engineering/Medicine/Pharmacology/Medical Science/Health Science/Veterinary Medicine or a related discipline;

  • Preference will be given to individuals who have completed a holistic undergraduate education with knowledge covering mathematics, statistics, cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, physiology, pathology, infectious diseases, pharmacology, medical laboratory technology, patient care, medicine, and veterinary medicine or animal science; 

  • Extremely competitive applicants who hold a degree in other science-related fields will also be considered; and

  • Additional attention will be paid to the students who have little training in the health/biology/medicine-related area to ensure that they can follow the progress of the programme.

English Proficiency Requirements

Applicants whose entrance qualification is obtained from an institution where the medium of instruction is NOT English should also fulfill the following minimum English proficiency requirement:

  • a score of 79 (Internet-based test) in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)@#; or

  • an overall band score of 6.0 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS)@##; or

  • band 6 in the Chinese mainland’s College English Test*; or

  • other equivalent qualifications.

@TOEFL and IELTS scores are considered valid for two years. Applicants are required to provide their English test results obtained within the two years preceding the commencement of the University's application period. 

# 'TOEFL iBT Home Edition', ‘TOEFL MyBest Score’, ‘IELTS Indicator’, ‘IELTS One Skill Retake’ and ‘IELTS Online’ are not acceptable.

## Applicants are required to arrange for sending their IELTS result(s) via the IELTS Results Service e-delivery to the University. Please note that applicants with an overall band score of 6.0 will be required to pass an interview for English proficiency conducted by the concerned academic unit. Interviews for other applicants may not be required.

Hong Kong Future Talents Scholarship Scheme for Advanced Studies

This programme has been selected by the University Grants Committee (UGC) for the scholarship award under the main priority area of ‘STEM’. Scholarships are available to local students admitted to the programme. Nominated students will be invited to submit applications for the scholarship. Students are required to complete 30 credit units for graduation from this Master of Science in Health Sciences and Biomedicine programme.  MSHSM will be organized as an interdisciplinary programme among Department of Biomedical Sciences (BMS), Department of Systems Engineering (SYE), and Department of Decision Analytics and Operations (DAOS).

The Master of Health Science and Biomedicine programme is divided into two streams: (1) Biomedicine Research Training Stream and (2) the Health Sciences Training Stream. Each of them comprising 12 credit units. The Biomedicine Research Training Stream is designed for students who wish to focus on developing advanced research skills and knowledge, particularly those considering future doctoral study or senior R & D developer in BioTech and Pharmaceutical companies. On the other hand, the Health Sciences Training Stream is geared towards students who wish to equip knowledge and practical experience in the field of management of health science and biomedicine, providing opportunities for experiential learning in professional settings. Students are required to select one of these streams at the beginning of their study, allowing them to tailor to their career goals and academic interests.
