Professor Ma Yue is currently Chair Professor of the Department of Economics and Finance of City University of Hong Kong. He earned a Bachelor's Degree of Science in Optimal Control Theory from Xiamen University, China, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Economics from Manchester University, the United Kingdom. He was a postgraduate student of three Nobel Prize (Economic Sciences) laureates at the China-US Economics Training Centre at Renmin University, Beijing, China. He was a Reader at Stirling University in Scotland, the United Kingdom.

Professor Ma's research interests include corporate finance, financial regulations, and Hong Kong’s economy and financial institutions. The main findings of his research have been shared as references for policy makers at the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the European Central Bank, and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority.

In his early years, Professor Ma made important policy contributions relating to predicting the fragility of Eurozone economies. He also successfully predicted that the economy of eastern Germany would lag behind that of its western counterpart for a long period after reunification, similar to the Mezzogiorno problem in southern Italy. This was breakthrough research with a long-lasting impact on policymaking related to economic development and the design of the exchange rate system. He has been published widely in leading international finance and economics journals, such as the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, and the Economic Journal. He won the “Best Paper Award” from the Journal of Financial Economics in 2011.
