CityUHK is ranked 2nd in Hong Kong in the ShanghaiRanking’s Academic Ranking of World Universities and is one of only two local universities in the global top 100

City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) has achieved a remarkable milestone by breaking into the global top 100 for the first time in the prestigious 2025 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy. Ranked 99th worldwide and 2nd in Hong Kong, CityUHK stands as only the second university in Hong Kong to reach the global top 100 since the ARWU's inception in 2003.

CityUHK has performed remarkably well in several key evaluation indicators. It was ranked first in Hong Kong in "Per Capita Performance", reflecting the competitiveness of its faculty in research output. Additionally, CityUHK was ranked 2nd in Hong Kong in both the "Number of Highly Cited Researchers selected by Clarivate" and "Number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science", further solidifying its internationally leading position in high-quality research output.

Professor Freddy Boey, President and University Distinguished Professor of CityUHK, stated, "CityUHK's continual rise in the international rankings in recent years is attributed to the ongoing improvement in research and the leading edge we hold in promoting internationalised education. CityUHK will continue to drive the development of higher education through innovation, global collaboration, and nurturing future leaders with a global vision, and promote the establishment of the 'Study in Hong Kong' brand, consolidating Hong Kong's position as a hub for higher education in Asia and globally."

The ARWU, widely regarded as one of the most influential and authoritative global university rankings, was first published in 2003 by the Centre for World-Class Universities, Graduate School of Education of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. More than 2,500 universities are ranked by ARWU every year, and the top 1,000 are published.

CityUHK's academic influence has also been recognised in other recent international rankings. In the 2026 Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings, CityUHK was ranked 1st in Asia and 2nd globally in the "Citations per Faculty" indicator, setting a record for Hong Kong universities.

Additionally, in the latest “2025 Research Leaders: Leading Institutions” rankings released by the Nature Index, CityUHK was ranked 1st in Hong Kong, 70th globally and 37th in the Asia Pacific region, once again highlighting its outstanding achievements in research output, research capabilities and international academic influence.
