City University of Hong Kong (CityU) introduced the Teaching Excellence Awards (TEA) in 1993. Under the scheme, one or more awards are presented each year to acknowledge and reward excellent teachers in the University. The ultimate goal is to nurture innovative teaching practices and promote education excellence.
The 2014 awardees will be available for interviews. They are:
Dr Elaine Au Liu Suk-ching, Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Social Studies
Dr Au integrates her counseling expertise into her teaching, and devotes herself to helping the younger generations grow with positive values and attitude. She broadens students’ vision with a wide range of service projects, such as the City-Youth Empowerment Project which was launched in 2005 that encourages students to serve the community.
Mr Scott Hessels, Associate Professor in the School of Creative Media (SCM)
Mr Hessels has coordinated two ground-breaking tours for the CityU Extreme Environments programme: one to the Mojave Desert and one to Antarctica. In his teaching philosophy, creative thinking is about taking a personal discovery and developing a concept that makes it universal.
Dr Samson Young Kar-fai, Assistant Professor in SCM
Dr Young believes teaching should encourage students to unleash their intellectual potential. He has created many innovative learning opportunities, such as the Laboratory for Ubiquitous Musical Expression (LUME) and CityU Electric Company, an electronic music orchestra.
