55 CityUHK scholars garner major national research funding, reaffirming excellence in research

CityUHK’s strong performance in national and Greater Bay Area funding schemes highlights the University’s research excellence and growing impact across diverse disciplines.

City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) has recently secured prestigious grants from both national and Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area funding schemes, reflecting the strong national recognition of CityUHK scholars and the quality of their research, while reinforcing the University’s commitment to fostering scientific innovation in support of national development.

CityUHK secured 55 grants under the 2026 National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). Under the Young Scientist Scheme, 41 CityUHK research projects were selected. Among them, two scholars were awarded top-tier Category A funding of RMB 4 million each for their outstanding work in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering; two other scholars received Category B funding of RMB 2 million each; and 37 scholars received Category C funding of RMB 300,000 each.

Furthermore, 14 research projects received funding under the General Programme, with each project awarded between RMB 400,000 and RMB 540,000. The funded projects cover a diverse array of disciplines, including Systems Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Energy and Environment, Computer Science, Data Science, Social and Behavioural Sciences, and Marketing. Notably, 24 of the awarded projects were submitted via CityUHK’s Shenzhen Research Institute.

CityUHK continues to expand medical and life sciences research in the Greater Bay Area.

These achievements underscore CityUHK’s deep integration into the national innovation ecosystem and its proactive contribution to the country’s drive towards greater self-reliance and strength in science and technology. They also signify the nation’s high recognition of CityUHK researchers and their scientific achievements, demonstrating the University’s research excellence and global impact.

CityUHK is also actively expanding frontier medical and life sciences research in the Greater Bay Area. Six CityUHK scholars clinched funding under the Shenzhen Medical Research Funding 2026 scheme, recognising CityUHK’s strong competitiveness in medicine and further advancing research innovation and industry-academia collaboration between Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

Securing these research grants further reaffirms CityUHK’s leading position in research and innovation. Going forward, the University will continue to build on its research strengths, support scholars in undertaking pioneering and impactful research, promote technological innovation and the translation of research outcomes, and contribute to the nation’s long-term development.
