A joint laboratory for cloud computing and big data will be established under an agreement signed between City University of Hong Kong (CityU) and China Telecom Corporation Limited Beijing Research Institute (China Telecom Beijing Research Institute) on 16 May. The aim is to develop innovative technologies and products through collaborative research.

The agreement was signed by Professor Lu Jian, CityU’s Vice-President (Research and Technology), and Mr Chen Yunqing, Vice-Dean of China Telecom Beijing Research Institute. Dr Wang Jianping, Associate Professor in CityU’s Department of Computer Science, also attended the signing ceremony.

“Cloud computing and big data analysis provide basic infrastructure and supporting technologies for strategic research areas, such as smart city, digital society and One Health, which are the three focuses in CityU’s Strategic Plan 2015–2020,” said Professor Lu. The collaboration would bring advantages to both sides, he added.

Mr Chen believed that the collaboration between CityU and China Telecom Beijing Research Institute would be fruitful in both cloud computing and big data.
