President delivers talk on nuclear safety

The President of City University of Hong Kong (CityU) delivered a talk on 2 September entitled “Is Nuclear Safety Reliable?” to a full house of 800 faculty and students at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China in Chengdu, Sichuan Province.

Professor Way Kuo started by analysing the factors involved in the nuclear accident at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, and then looked at a series of statistics that illustrate how nuclear power is still among the safest and cleanest energy sources used today. He pointed out that high-quality facilities, well-trained professional staff and a strict management system are essential factors for reducing nuclear risks.

He concluded his talk by promoting discovery and innovation for solving future energy problems.

Faculty accompanying the President on the trip included Professor Xue Quan, Associate Vice-President (Innovation Advancement and China Office), Chair Professor Chan Chi-hou and Chair Professor Luk Kwai-man of the Department of Electronic Engineering, and Chair Professor Xie Min of the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management.
