Wi-Fi Improvement Campaign

by S K Tsui

Wi-Fi is one of the most common technologies that provide users with a convenient way to connect their mobile devices to the campus network/Internet.

Over 3,200 Wi-Fi access points (APs) are currently installed across the CityU campus.  As a step forward for the University to offer Wi-Fi services based on state-of-the-art technologies to our staff and students, over 400 new APs with the latest Wi-Fi 6 standard were installed after 2020.  To meet the campus community’s growing demand for fast and secure Wi-Fi connectivity and coverage, the Computing Services Centre (CSC) will continue to install more APs and gradually upgrade the existing APs to the Wi-Fi 6 or 6E standard.

Improvement projects in progress

  • All the APs inside the Library, Lecture Theatres and BOC Canteen (City Express) have been upgraded to Wi-Fi 6 standard.  Additional Wi-Fi 6 APs will be installed to improve coverage and transfer speed.

  • New APs are installed in the office and common areas that suffer from weak signals based on the office revamp projects and staff/students’ feedback.

  • Improvement of Wi-Fi services in outdoor and public areas, such as the Roof Garden of LAU and LI Building, Wong’s International Terrace, are in progress by installing weatherproof outdoor APs.

Tips for using Wi-Fi service

To enjoy the best performance of the new Wi-Fi 6 standard, you are advised to configure your dual-band (2.4 GHz and 5GHz) mobile device to operate in 5GHz because 5GHz has more user capacity, less radio interference, and higher transfer speed.  Furthermore, it is essential for your device’s operating system or firmware be regularly updated to the latest version for bug fixes and optimal performance.

If you experience any Wi-Fi issues, such as failure to connect to the Wi-Fi and slow transfer speed, please report your problem via the Service portal, scan the QR code on the new poster, or contact the IT Service Desk (x8340) for assistance.
