E Farm Biotech Limited

E Farm Biotech Limited (EFB), incorporated in 2018, was the first commercial farm in Hong Kong which raises black soldier flies to spearhead efficient food waste conversion technology for a circular economy. It is supported by the Recycling Fund of the Hong Kong Government. EFB reduces the waste of resources and landfill pressure by maximising otherwise discarded resources, transforming them into precious protein resources for animal feed and compost for agricultural use, as well as pioneering BSF research into niche by-products.

This alleviates environmental problems associated with organic waste, by reducing the burden on landfills and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions, and is a more cost-effective approach, as it requires less land and water and generate more resources, such as protein. Our technology also protects the environment, particularly the marine ecosystem, as insects are a natural alternative to fishmeal.

Our main products and services include food waste collection, creating compost for farms and generating black soldier fly larvae, both fresh and dried, for animal feed. Discarded food waste is turned into food for black soldier flies, thereby producing high-nutrition natural feed, which can be used in local agriculture in Hong Kong, reducing transportation costs and our collective carbon footprint.

EFB also conducts seminars and workshops to raise awareness of food waste issues and promote the full utilisation of resources for sustainable development. EFB cooperates with research units in various universities to explore other uses for black soldier flies, including pharmaceutical and industrial applications.
