Cambridge academic odyssey commences for CityUHK Physics student awarded CityUHK-Cambridge Scholarships

The first cohort of master’s students from City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) to receive scholarships under the collaboration with Lucy Cavendish College and Newnham College at the University of Cambridge is getting ready for a unique academic experience at Cambridge at the start of the 2025/26 academic year.

These outstanding CityUHK students have been encouraged to pursue master’s degrees at Cambridge through the comprehensive partnership established between the two universities.

Global academic connections

Receiving the scholarship was extremely significant, said Luo Zhihao, who recently completed his Bachelor of Science in Physics at CityUHK, in part because his academic journey has not always been smooth, particularly in the early years. However, his mentor, Professor Zhang Ruiqin from the Department of Physics at CityUHK, and his own persistence and self-reflection reignited his passion and clarified his purpose for learning.

Zhihao says his own beliefs resonate strongly with the philosophy that “students gain not only a degree but also a holistic education” at CityUHK and that seizing opportunities while young and avoiding self-imposed restrictions are very important.

He will pursue a one-year MPhil by Research in Materials Science at Cambridge starting this Autumn, followed by a four-year PhD in Physics at CityUHK under the joint supervision of Professor Zhang and Professor Manish Chhowalla from Cambridge’s Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy. Zhihao looks forward to deepening his understanding of international research and knowledge transfer while building global academic connections. In the long term, he hopes to return to CityUHK as a professor and entrepreneur, contributing his knowledge and experience to his alma mater.

Broadening global perspectives

The aim of the scholarship programmes launched with the University of Cambridge is to offer elite students invaluable study abroad opportunities that will broaden their international outlook. The CityUHK-Lucy Cavendish College Scholarship programme, starting in the 2025/26 academic year, will support up to 20 students annually to pursue master's degrees at Cambridge. Each recipient will receive a full scholarship covering a one-year, full-time master's programme.

In addition, the CityUHK Research Master Scholarship at Newnham College will fund two female CityUHK Research Master students per year to study at Newnham College. The students will subsequently return to CityUHK to pursue doctoral degree programmes under the joint supervision of CityUHK and University of Cambridge scholars.

Beyond these two scholarship programmes, CityUHK has partnered with the Cambridge Judge Business School, the Cambridge School of Arts and Humanities, and Lucy Cavendish College to launch scholarship programmes for students pursuing a Master of Finance, a Master of Philosophy in the Digital Humanities and a Research Master, respectively. These initiatives provide CityUHK students with diverse scholarship opportunities tailored to their academic needs.
