Two CityUHK Physics Scholars Honoured by the Physical Society of Hong Kong

The Physical Society of Hong Kong (PSHK) announced at its Annual General Meeting on 16 July 2026 that Professor Ruiqin Zhang had been elected an Honorary Member of the Society, while Professor Din-Ping Tsai had been elected a Fellow of the Society. Both scholars are affiliated with the Department of Physics at City University of Hong Kong.

Professor Zhang was elected an Honorary Member in recognition of his extensive service to the Hong Kong physics community, particularly his efforts to re-energise PSHK during his four-year tenure as President from 2013 to 2017. During this period, he played an important role in strengthening the Society’s activities, broadening its engagement with physicists and students, and enhancing its contribution to the local scientific community.

Prof. Zhang is a Chair Professor in the Department of Physics at City University of Hong Kong. His research focuses on low-dimensional functional materials and nanoscience, combining computational and experimental approaches such as molecular dynamics, Monte Carlo methods and first-principles calculations. His recent work explores nanomaterial interactions with chemical, biological and medical systems, with applications in energy, biomedicine and environmental science.

Professor Tsai was elected a Fellow of PSHK in recognition of his distinguished contributions to near-field optics, plasmonics, nanophotonics and metaphotonics. He is a Chair Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and the Department of Physics at CityUHK. His research spans nanophotonics, metamaterials, metasurfaces and meta-devices, with applications in advanced optical technologies and photonic information processing.

Professor Tsai’s work has also received extensive international recognition. He has been elected a Fellow of several leading scientific and engineering organisations, including the American Physical Society, IEEE, Optica and SPIE

The election of Professor Zhang and Professor Tsai recognises both sustained service to the physics community and outstanding scientific achievement. The Department of Physics warmly congratulates them on these well-deserved honours.
