From 28 July to 8 August 2025, the Department of Physics at CityUHK hosted 19 undergraduate students from the School of Materials and Physics, China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT), for the 2025 Hong Kong Summer Research and Internship Program. The program offered two weeks of immersive learning, cutting-edge research exposure, and cross-cultural exchange.

The opening ceremony featured welcome remarks from Prof Yang REN, Head of the Department of Physics, and program orientation by Prof Sunny Xin WANG, Associate Professor. Prof Zhedong ZHANG, Associate Professor, delivered the inaugural lecture on Theoretical Quantum Spectroscopy and Photonics, sparking in-depth discussions among students and researchers.

Throughout the program, nine faculty members — ranging from early-career rising stars to internationally recognized scholars — presented lectures on frontier topics, including quantum physics, condensed matter, photonics, quantum materials, soft matter, and superconductivity. Daily afternoon sessions allowed PhD students to share nearly 40 research presentations and lead guided lab tours. Highlights included VR-based quantum physics demonstrations, neutron scattering laboratory visits, and first-hand operation of advanced instruments such as ARPES systems, dilution refrigerators, and in-situ quantum material growth setups.

Students reflected that the experience not only deepened their professional knowledge but also broadened their global academic perspectives and clarified their research aspirations. The program also strengthened institutional ties between CUMT and CityUHK, exploring future collaborations in research and talent cultivation. This partnership exemplifies how cross-border academic programs can build strong research foundations, enhance cultural understanding, and prepare the next generation of scientists for global challenges.
