My month in Vancouver as part of the Vancouver Summer Program at the University of British Columbia was an enriching experience, both academically and personally. The serene environment, coupled with the stimulating coursework, made this journey unforgettable. The lush greenery and tranquil atmosphere in Vancouver provided the perfect backdrop for learning and self-reflection. The city’s natural beauty had a calming effect on me. It allowed me to feel more relaxed and focused throughout the programme.
The courses I undertook, Introduction to Clinical Medicine in the Hospital Setting and Introduction to Scientific Research in the Hospital Setting, were meticulously designed to offer hands-on experience and theoretical knowledge. What stood out to me the most was the approachability and dedication of the doctors and instructors. The physician-educators were not only knowledgeable but also incredibly supportive. Their teaching style was engaging, encouraging active participation and critical thinking. I particularly appreciated the opportunity to discuss my career aspirations with them, as their insights provided clarity and motivation for my future path in medicine.
The clinical medicine course was a highlight, as it allowed me to step into the hospital setting and immerse myself in real-world medical practices. Learning how to take patient histories, conduct physical examinations, and develop differential diagnoses was both challenging and rewarding. The workshops, such as the ECG interpretation and medical simulation sessions, were invaluable. They enabled me to apply what I had learned in lectures to practical scenarios, reinforcing my understanding and confidence. Visiting the emergency department and participating in advanced resuscitation courses were eye-opening experiences that deepened my appreciation for the complexities of patient care.
Similarly, the scientific research course broadened my perspective on the role of research in advancing medicine. The workshops on research methodology, literature reviews, and ethics were particularly enlightening. They helped me to revise my knowledge in biological science. Collaborating with peers to develop a research proposal was a rewarding exercise that honed my teamwork and analytical skills, even as organising contributions from various participants presented challenges. Presenting our proposal was both nerve-wracking and exhilarating, and the feedback from the instructors was incredibly constructive.
Beyond the classroom, the programme’s structure allowed for a balanced experience. The hospital tours, such as the visit to the BC Children’s Research Institute, provided a glimpse into the cutting-edge work being done in paediatric medicine. The blend of lectures, workshops, and hands-on activities ensured that every day was dynamic and engaging. Despite the demanding workload, I found the experience to be highly rewarding and enjoyable.
As I reflect on this month, I am grateful for the friendships I formed with fellow students, the mentorship I received from the faculty, and the skills I acquired. The peaceful environment in Vancouver and the programme’s immersive curriculum have left a lasting impression on me. This experience has not only strengthened my academic foundation but also reaffirmed my passion for medicine and research. I leave with a deeper understanding of clinical practice and scientific inquiry, as well as cherished memories of a city that effortlessly blends nature with innovation.
This month in Vancouver has been transformative, and I am confident that the lessons learned here will guide me as I continue my journey in the medical field.
