Dr Yao received his PhD in chemistry from Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2011 under the supervision of Prof. Lei Jiang. He then did his postdoc training with Prof. Joanna Aizenberg at School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and Wyss Institute of Bio-inspired Engineering at Harvard University. He joined City University of Hong Kong as a tenure-track assistant professor in September 2014 and was promoted to associated professor with tenure in July 2019.

Research Interests

We are a group of experimentalists dedicated to solving both scientifically interesting problems in soft matter, and those with more near-term application. We start from chemistry to design materials, and we use nanotechnology and engineering tools to optimize material performance and promote potential application in energy, environment and biomedicine. Applications of our work include anti-fouling and anti-biofouling, water and energy sustainability, biochemical sensing and diagnostics. Our research interest includes self-healable material, nanoparticle and micro/nanoneedle development, surface science and engineering. We are developing innovative technologies for drug delivery, pathogen detection and diagnostics. More information can be found at our group website.

Position Availability

PhD and research assistant positions are available. BSc or MSc students with great passion in chemistry, material science, engineering and biomedical research and excellent academic records and research experiences are encouraged to apply. Please contact Dr Yao directly. More information can be found at our group website.
