Dr. Sam HSU funded by Mainland-Hong Kong Joint Funding Scheme for the commercialization of next-generation light-emitting diodes

Dr. Sam HSU received about HK$2.5M funding together with over HK$3M Research Talent Hub (RTH) from the Mainland-Hong Kong Joint Funding Scheme (MHKJFS) launched by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) and the Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC). MHKJFS aims to support research and development (R&D) collaboration among universities, research institutes, and technology enterprises in Hong Kong and the Mainland. This two-year project will focus on the development of large-area, high-performing, and stable perovskite light-emitting didoes.

The global LED lighting market 2020 size stood at US$55,201.9M, and it is expected to reach US$152,442.3M by 2030. Currently, there are several challenging issues hindering the commercialization of perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLED). To address these technical problems, Dr, Hsu and his team will determine the structure-activity relationship and design a rational material structure by combining with theoretical simulation to develop a film manufacturing technology for a large-area compatible fabrication. Additionally, grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering will be used to explore the crystallization kinetics of the materials, and utilize photophysical and photoelectrochemical technologies for an in-depth understanding of charge recombination dynamics in the perovskite emissive layers, other interlayers and interfaces. Finally, in-situ testing and characterization methods will also be adopted to deeply understand the key failure mechanisms to guide material optimization and device construction.
