Programme Content
  • To educate students to excel in advanced mechanical engineering discipline as well as to extend the boundaries of their professional competence to meet the needs of future industrial development.
  • To provide opportunities for students to develop leadership and creativity by engaging in interactive learning environments and management studies.
  • To provide students with knowledge/skills in nuclear reactor systems and safety, nuclear thermal hydraulics, nuclear materials, radiation protection, and risk engineering.
  • To prepare students who wish to pursue graduate degrees or enter the workforce in the mechanical engineering industry.

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs):

  • Acquire essential concepts and knowledge of advanced mechanical engineering as well as across the boundaries of interdisciplinary disciplines.
  • Apply specialized knowledge to solve problems that are critical to future growth of industry and business.

Entrance Requirements

Applicants must satisfy the University's General Entrance Requirements and the following programme entrance requirements:

  • Hold a degree in engineering or equivalent;
  • Applicants must have mechanical engineering or related engineering academic background.

Note: Final year undergraduate students who will acquire the requisite academic qualification before the commencement of the programme may apply for admission.

 

English Proficiency Requirement

Applicants whose entrance qualification is obtained from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English should fulfil the following minimum English proficiency requirement:

  • a score of 79 (for tests taken prior to 21 January 2026) or 4 (for tests taken from 21 January 2026 onwards) (Internet-based Test) in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)@#; or
  • an overall band score of 6.0 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS) @#; or
  • a score of 450 in the Chinese Mainland's College English Test (CET-6); or
  • other equivalent qualifications.

@ TOEFL and IELTS scores are considered valid for two years. Applicants are required to provide their English test results obtained within the two years preceding the start of the University's application period. 'TOEFL iBT Home Edition', ‘TOEFL MyBest Score’, ‘IELTS Indicator’, ‘IELTS One Skill Retake’ and ‘IELTS Online’ are not acceptable. All TOEFL results must be sent directly by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) using CityUHK’s institution code 3401, while IELTS results must be sent via the IELTS Results Service e-delivery to 'City University of Hong Kong - Graduate School'.

 

# Applicants with an IELTS overall band score of 6.0 or a TOEFL overall score of 4 will be required to pass an interview for English proficiency conducted by the concerned academic unit. Applicants with a comparable overall score of 79 or above shown on the TOEFL report may be exempt from the interview requirement. Interviews for other applicants may not be required.

Course Description

Students may obtain the MSc degree upon completion of 30 credit units by following either path of study:

(i) 4 core courses + 6 elective taught courses; or

(ii) 4 core courses + dissertation + 3 elective taught courses


 

The Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering programme is divided into three streams: (1) the Mechanical Stream, (2) the Robotics Stream, and (3) the Nuclear Stream.

 

The Mechanical Stream is designed for students who wish to focus on developing advanced research skills and knowledge in the general mechanical engineering field. The Robotics Stream focuses on advanced automation, intelligent systems, and applications of modern robotics, in response to the booming demands for expertise in the relevant hi-tech areas. The Nuclear Stream is geared toward students who wish to acquire knowledge and practical experience in the field of nuclear engineering, providing opportunities for experiential learning in professional settings. Students are required to select one of these streams at the time of application to the program.

Remarks:
^ If student opts for taking dissertation to complete the programme study, the normal duration for graduation will be 1.5 years.
† Combined mode: Local students taking programmes in combined mode can attend full-time (12-18 credit units per semester) or part-time (no more than 11 credit units per semester) study in different semesters without seeking approval from the University.For non-local students, they will be admitted to these programmes for either full-time or part-time studies. Non-local students must maintain the required credit load for their full-time or part-time studies and any changes will require approval from the University.
