The programme aims to:

1. equip graduates with advanced knowledge and state-of-the-art technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), in the fields of civil infrastructure and building sustainability.
2. develop graduates' multidisciplinary problem-solving abilities and foster their innovative mindset to tackle future challenges in the industry.
3. nurture highly skilled professionals specializing in civil infrastructure, building engineering, and urban sustainability.

Applicants must satisfy the General Entrance Requirements and have one of the following criteria to be eligible for admission: 

• Hold a degree in civil engineering with a focus on structural engineering, transportation engineering, geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering, or water resources engineering; or
• Hold a degree in building engineering or a related discipline, such as building environment and equipment engineering, building science and technology, renewable energy and green buildings, intelligent building technologies, urban planning and sustainability; or
• Possess an equivalent qualification or provide evidence of academic and professional achievements deemed acceptable by the University. 

Applicants whose entrance qualification is obtained from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English should fulfil the following minimum English proficiency requirement:

• a score of 79 (for tests taken prior to 21 January 2026) or 4 (for tests taken from 21 January 2026 onwards) (Internet-based Test) in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)^@#; or
• an overall band score of 6.0 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS) ^@#; or
• a score of 450 in the Chinese Mainland’s College English Test Band 6 (CET-6); or
• other equivalent qualifications

^@TOEFL and IELTS scores are considered valid for two years. Applicants are required to provide their English test results obtained within the two years preceding the start of the University's application period. 'TOEFL iBT Home Edition', ‘TOEFL MyBest Score’, ‘IELTS Indicator’, ‘IELTS One Skill Retake’ and ‘IELTS Online’ are not acceptable. All TOEFL results must be sent directly by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) using CityUHK’s institution code 3401, while IELTS results must be sent via the IELTS Results Service e-delivery to 'City University of Hong Kong - Graduate School'.

^#Applicants with an IELTS overall band score of 6.0 or a TOEFL overall score of 4 will be required to pass an interview for English proficiency conducted by the concerned academic unit. Applicants with a comparable overall score of 79 or above shown on the TOEFL report may be exempt from the interview requirement. Interviews for other applicants may not be required.

• Building Environment and Sustainability Stream
• Civil Infrastructure Engineering Stream

Each student must satisfactorily complete at least 30 credit units before the Master of Science degree is awarded. Reference should be made to the programme document and the student handbook for the criteria of choosing electives. Students may be allowed to switch between streams but they are not allowed to take two or more streams simultaneously.

In general, application for credit unit transfer is normally not entertained. In case an application is considered fully justified by the Head of Department, the courses for transfer must be taken from master programme by the student within 3 years from the date of application of this transfer exercise. This arrangement does not apply to students registering for another stream after graduation from one stream. Criteria for granting credit unit transfer include the level, the duration and the content of the course.

Applications for credit transfer for work completed prior to entry to the University must be made in the first semester following the student’s admission, before the deadline set by the University. Applications for credit transfer for outside work completed after admission to the University must be made immediately in the semester following attainment of the additional qualification.
