Dr. Yuanhao Huang, an alumnus of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at City University of Hong Kong and the founder, chairman, and CEO of Orbbec Science & Technology Co., Ltd. (688322.SH), has been dedicated to the field of 3D visual perception for many years. Under his leadership, the company has grown into an industry-leading robotics vision and 3D vision technology enterprise.
Since founding Orbbec in Shenzhen in 2013, Yuanhao Huang, leveraging his profound expertise in optical measurement, has led his team to overcome key technological challenges in 3D sensing chips, specialized optical systems, and core algorithms. The company successfully developed China's first 3D perception chip and established Asia's first production line for consumer-grade 3D sensing cameras, breaking the technological monopoly held by international giants such as Apple, Microsoft, and Intel.
Under Yuanhao Huang's leadership, Orbbec has demonstrated strong growth momentum. The company has now developed into one of the few enterprises globally to comprehensively six major 3D visual perception technology routes, including structured light, iToF, binocular vision, dToF, and LiDAR. With nearly 2,000 patent applications, of which over 60% are invention patents, Orbbec ranks among the global leaders in patent applications. Its products and services cover various fields such as robotics, biometric identification, and 3D scanning, serving over 3,000 clients worldwide and exporting products to nearly 100 countries and regions. Notably, Orbbec holds a market share of over 70% in 3D vision sensors for service robots in China and for mobile robots in South Korea, securing its position as an industry leader.
Yuanhao Huang innovatively proposed the strategic positioning of "Robotics and AI Vision Industrial Middle Platform," focusing on providing core visual technology support for the industry chain. In recent years, Orbbec has achieved significant results in international cooperation, forming strategic partnerships with global tech giants such as Microsoft and NVIDIA, and launching industry-leading 3D vision products including the Femto series. In July 2022, the company successfully listed on the STAR Market, earning the title "the first stock of 3D vision." In the first half of 2025, the company reached an important turning point in its performance, achieving a 104% year-on-year revenue growth and a 212% year-on-year increase in net profit.
As one of the innovative entrepreneurs and advanced model individuals recognized on the 40th anniversary of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, Yuanhao Huang's entrepreneurial journey fully demonstrates the outstanding achievements of City University of Hong Kong alumni in the field of hard technology innovation. Looking ahead, he stated that he will continue to uphold the corporate mission of "enabling all devices to understand the world," deepen the strategic positioning of the "Robotics and AI Vision Industrial Middle Platform," and promote the deep integration of 3D vision technology and embodied intelligence. "We are on the eve of an explosion in artificial intelligence technology," Yuanhao Huang said. "As an alumnus of City University, I will lead the team to continue innovating, equipping the global robotics industry with smarter 'eyes,' and helping China seize the opportunity in the new generation of AI technology revolution."
Yuanhao Huang completed his doctoral program in 2009 at the Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management (now the Department of Mechanical Engineering) at City University of Hong Kong. He stated that his studies at CityUHK helped him master the application of research. During his academic years, he consistently engaged in research related to optical measurement, 3D topography measurement, and stress-strain solutions, while also learning various practical scientific methods such as laser interferometry and photogrammetry. These experiences provided him with valuable training. He believes that the faculty at CityUHK possesses a global perspective, and the teaching and research in the engineering department emphasize practicality. The faculty guided students to apply their knowledge, from which he benefited greatly. Dr. Huang remarked, “The goal of Orbbec is to transform academic algorithms and theoretical formulas into intelligent devices for large-scale commercial applications, bringing convenience to both industry and everyday life. My training at CityUHK has been immensely helpful in achieving this vision.”
Among the outstanding alumni of City University of Hong Kong, Yuanhao Huang has written a remarkable chapter from laboratory research to industrial success with his pioneering contributions in the field of 3D visual perception. His story reflects the university's motto of "dedication and collaboration," showcasing how engineering talents cultivated by CityUHK transform academic research into practical forces driving social progress. As an outstanding representative of the CityUHK alumni community, he not only injects new momentum into industrial development through technological innovation but also practices the social responsibility of CityUHK members with a spirit of contributing to the nation through industry. In him, we see the successful implementation of CityUHK's educational philosophy, cultivating versatile talents with professional depth, industrial vision, and the ability to serve society through technological innovation. This success model is inspiring more CityUHK students to courageously explore, innovate boldly, and shine in their respective fields.
