Mr Justin GLEESON SC visited CityU School of Law
On 13 March 2024, the School of Law was honoured to have Mr Justin GLEESON SC for a Fireside Chat and an insightful Q&A session with CityU’s students. The event was moderated by Prof. Alexander LOKE and Prof. Noam ZAMIR.
Mr Justin GLEESON, former Solicitor-General of Australia, is a distinguished international practitioner who regularly serves as an arbitrator in high-value and complex international proceedings and acts as counsel.
During the Fireside Chat, Mr GLEESON shared his professional journey from the days he was a law student in Australia to his present career as a leading international arbitrator and counsel. Mr GLEESON also discussed his BCL studies at Oxford and his distinguished career as Solicitor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia. Furthermore, Mr GLEESON talked about, inter alia, the different factors that students should consider when contemplating an international career, his thoughts on practicing international law, the importance of post-graduate studies, different aspects of working as a solicitor and a barrister and the role of the Solicitor-General in Australia. In addition, Mr GLEESON talked about the cases that he appeared in front of the International Court of Justice, namely the cases of Australia v Japan (Whaling in the Antarctic) and Timor-Leste v Australia (Questions relating to the Seizure and Detention of Certain Documents and Data).
***A fireside chat today typically takes the form of an informal conversation between a moderator and a guest speaker. The term ‘fireside chat’ originates in President F D Roosevelt’s broadcast to the Americans during the Great Depression. The format is in contrast to a keynote address or a lecture, both of which entail a greater degree of formality. In a fireside chat, the topics covered tend to more wide-ranging, ranging from the guest’s personal stories and experiences to the guest’s views on topical subjects. The informal and relaxed setting allows participants to know more about the guest as well as the topics discussed.

Justin GLEESON 先生是一位傑出的國際執業律師，他曾擔任澳洲聯邦副檢察長，並常在複雜的國際訴訟中擔任仲裁員及法律顧問。
在爐邊談話中， GLEESON 先生無私分享了他從法學生走向國際知名的仲裁員與律師的職業生涯。GLEESON 先生還談到了他在牛津大學攻讀民法學碩士（ BCL） 的經歷，以及他在澳洲聯邦檢察院的傑出貢獻。此外，GLEESON先生亦提及學了生在考慮海外執業時應考慮的各種因素、並且分享了他對實踐國際法的看法、研究生學習的重要性、律師、大律師以及澳大利亞副檢察長各種角色的不同之處。最後，GLEESON 先生分享了他在國際法院出庭的著名案件，即澳洲訴日本（南極捕鯨案）和東帝汶訴澳洲（文件、數據檢取及扣留）。
