Several Part-time Technical Assistant/Student Helper Positions (3 months)

 

We are recruiting at least three part-time Technical Assistants or Student Helpers to support conference and lab-event design work, research communication, and public education.

 

Project 1: Design souvenirs, posters, and visual materials for lab events and SKLMEH research themes.

Project 2: Edit photos and create marine- and ocean-science related illustrations, icons, figures, and visual elements for academic articles, popular science articles, presentation slides, exhibition panels, and showcase materials.

Project 3: Help update the lab website and prepare engaging research stories and visual content for SKLMEH social media platforms, including WeChat, Facebook, and Twitter/X.

 

Requirements

  • Current undergraduate or postgraduate students, or recent graduates, in design, creative media, communication, science communication, environmental science, marine science, biology, or related fields are welcome to apply.
  • Applicants should be responsible, detail-oriented, creative, and able to meet deadlines.
  • A portfolio of previous design, illustration, media, website, photography, or science communication work is highly preferred.
  • Prior experience in research communication, environmental education, public engagement, or event design would be an advantage.

 

Preferred Background and Skills

Applicants with backgrounds or experience in the following areas are especially welcome:

  • Graphic design, visual communication, creative media, digital media, multimedia design, illustration, animation, or related disciplines.
  • Experience in poster design, branding, layout design, infographic design, social media content creation, or science communication.
  • Skills in design and editing software such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro, Canva, Figma, Procreate, or other relevant tools.
  • Ability to create clear, attractive, and scientifically appropriate visual materials for both academic and public audiences.
  • Interest in marine science, ocean conservation, biodiversity, fisheries, environmental education, or public engagement.
  • Good sense of aesthetics, attention to detail, creativity, and willingness to learn scientific concepts.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with researchers and students.
  • Basic website editing, photography, video editing, copywriting, or bilingual content preparation skills would be an advantage.
  • Proficiency in English is preferred. Proficiency in Chinese, especially for WeChat or public education materials, would be an advantage.

 

Main Duties

The appointees will assist in one or more of the following tasks:

  • Designing posters, souvenirs, banners, presentation materials, and event-related visual items.
  • Preparing illustrations, icons, diagrams, and edited images for research, teaching, outreach, and publicity purposes.
  • Supporting the design of conference materials, lab-event materials, exhibition displays, and public education resources.
  • Developing visual content and short research stories for websites and social media platforms.
  • Assisting with photo editing, layout formatting, and visual polishing of academic and popular science materials.
  • Communicating with lab members to understand scientific content and translate it into accessible visual materials.

Remarks

The positions are part-time and will last for approximately 3 months. Working time (0-16.5 hours/week) and specific duties can be discussed depending on the applicants’ availability, skills, and project needs. Outstanding appointees may be considered for contract renewal and longer-term collaboration opportunities, subject to project needs and performance.
