Director's Message

As Director of the State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Health (SKLMEH) at City University of Hong Kong, I am pleased to welcome you to our Laboratory. Our work is guided by our mission to advance science that protects the marine environment and strengthens ecological resilience. Aligned with the national 15th Five-Year Plan, we support the implementation of Ecological Civilisation, promoting a harmonious relationship between nature and humanity.

The Laboratory focuses on research and innovation in three key areas:
1) Pollution monitoring, assessment and control;
2) Biodiversity conservation and ecological security; and
3) Ecosystem restoration and health.

Through these integrated research directions, we seek not only to deepen scientific understanding, but also to develop practical technologies and effective solutions that can respond to emerging environmental challenges.

Our strength lies in our collective expertise. Members of the Laboratory are leading researchers from eight local universities in Hong Kong, bringing together diverse perspectives, capabilities, and scientific excellence. We work collaboratively to translate research findings into innovations with real-world value.

We are also committed to creating positive societal impacts. Our Laboratory’s efforts extend beyond publications and technical advances: we nurture young researchers and entrepreneurs, encourage start-up formation, and contribute to environmental education and science outreach. By engaging with the wider community, we aim to build public awareness and scientific literacy, and to inspire the next generation to pursue meaningful careers in environmental science and technology.

I invite you to explore our website to learn more about our research, people, and initiatives. Together with our partners, stakeholders, and supporters, we look forward to contributing to a healthier ocean and a more sustainable future for Hong Kong, our nation, and the world.

Warm regards,
Professor Kenneth Leung
