The second seminar of the Pro-Chancellor’s Seminar Series took place on 1 March 2024 at City University of Hong Kong, exploring the dynamic realm of “Energy, Environment, and Sustainability: Local Strength and Global Impact”. The seminar was led by Professor Chen Guohua, the Dean of the School of Energy and Environment (SEE). The event also served as a celebration of the 15th anniversary of the School’s establishment, highlighting its noteworthy achievements and ongoing commitment to societal well-being.

We are delighted to announce that Professor Alicia AN’s Innovation and Technology Fund Support Programme Partnership Research Programme project, titled “Green Hydrogen-Powered Off-Grid Energy-Water Station (Micro-Grid)”, has been approved for funding with a budget of HKD 5,999,790 plus provisions for Postdoctoral researchers over three years. The total funding will be about HKD 12 million.

Prof. Jason Lam’s team invented a methodology to synthesize a valuable chemical, gamma-butyrolactone (GBL), using a feedstock derived from biomass yard waste, furoic acid. The work is published in Nature Communications, titled “One-pot redox cascade paired electrosynthesis of gamma-butyrolactone from furoic acid”.

The 15th Annual Dinner of the School of Energy and Environment (SEE) was held on 19 January 2024. Around 100 students, alumni and staff gathered for a memorable evening. The event commenced with a warm and vibrant reception, where faculty members, staff, and students mingled and engaged in animated conversations. It was heartening to witness the exchange of ideas and the forging of new connections, fostering a sense of togetherness and collaboration.

Prof. Chunhua Liu and Dr. Kuo Feng have been awarded two prestigious awards by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) for their groundbreaking research. The paper, titled “Distributed Hierarchical Control for Fast Frequency Restoration in VSG-Controlled Islanded Microgrids”, published in the IEEE Open Journal of the Industrial Electronics Society (OJIES), has earned them the 2023 IEEE Outstanding Paper Award for the IEEE OJIES.
