The greenhouse gas emissions have been rising continuously in Hong Kong since 2000, amounting to over 40 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2012. Hong Kong’s response to the 2015 Paris Agreement is to achieve a reduction in carbon intensity by 50 to 60 percent by 2020 relative to the 2005 level.
As a Co-PI, Dr. Alicia An, in collaboration with Prof. Guanghao Chen at HKUST (the PC) and other Co-PIs (HKU, PolyU, and CUHK) successfully joined the 9th round of the TRS.
Mr. Nallapaneni Manoj Kumar, PhD student under the supervision of Dr. Shauhrat S. Chopra, received the Best Poster Award from the Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment Section at the 10th International Conference of the International Society for Industrial Ecology (ISIE 2019).
Dr. Lin Zhang has published a translated book by Peking University Press. The title of this book is “Greening Economy, Graying Society” (中文名：綠化經濟與構建可持續社會).
Engineered nanomaterials are being exploited for applications in numerous fields including medicine, consumer electronics, and many others. While these materials are engineered with function and cost in mind, there is no consideration of long-term environmental impacts associated with them early in the design process.
Hong Kong is one of the most populous cities in the world with a density of 130,000 people per square kilometre, generating more than 6 million tons of trash per year. Waste management is particularly difficult due to the geography of the archipelago which, like other island regions, lacks space.
Dr. Masaru Yarime spoke on innovation and government policy at RTHK Radio 3 "Backchat" on 7 March 2018. The guests coming from academia and industry discussed the recent government plan to make a large invest in innovation and technological development and its implications for the industry's competitiveness and people's welfare in Hong Kong.
