PHY Professors Garner Silver Medals at International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva

Professor Condon Lau and Professor Peter Yu Kwan-Ngok from the Department of Physics, along with their teams, have achieved impressive results at the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva (IEIG), showcasing their excellence in high-quality research and innovation on a global scale.

The IEIG is an annual event that provides a unique platform for inventors and researchers to present the outcomes of their research and showcase new products. The 49th IEIG, held in Switzerland from April 17 to 21, featured over 1,000 inventions from 38 countries and regions worldwide. With an attendance of over 25,000 participants, the event offered unparalleled opportunities to explore the latest developments in invention and innovation. Attendees had the chance to participate in workshops, conferences, and demonstrations dedicated to future inventors.

Professor Condon Lau's team was awarded a Silver Medal for their groundbreaking project "AI-Powered Virtual Immunocytochemistry for Rapid and Robust Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy Diagnosis." The project utilised AI image generation to create a virtual staining tool that allows pathologists to quickly image proteins or other antigens in cell and tissue samples obtained through fine needle aspiration biopsy. This innovative approach revolutionises the diagnostic process, enabling rapid and reliable diagnosis for patients.

Professor Peter Yu was involved in the project "Artificial Mussels: New Universal Tool for Monitoring Heavy Metals and Radionuclides in Aquatic Environments" and won the Silver Medal. The project introduced artificial mussels with universal metal-capturing materials as innovative sampling tools for effectively monitoring heavy metals and radionuclides in water, resulting in a 95% cost reduction.

These achievements are a testament to the team's dedication and expertise in their field. Notably, both teams are part of HK Tech 300, CityUHK's large-scale flagship innovation and entrepreneurship program. We extend our warmest congratulations to the award-winning teams for their outstanding accomplishments. We eagerly anticipate their continued success at next year's IEIG as they continue to push the boundaries of research and innovation in their field.
