Professor Dirk U Pfeiffer is currently Chair Professor of One Health in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Public Health, and Director of the Centre for Applied One Health Research and Policy Advice of City University of Hong Kong (CityU). He is also an Adjunct Professor at the China Animal Health and Epidemiology Centre in Qingdao, China.

The research of Professor Pfeiffer focuses on the prevention and control of infectious diseases of global significance, such as avian influenza and African swine fever, using advanced quantitative epidemiological methods with a special emphasis on the translation of science into policy.

Professor Pfeiffer has held numerous memberships of advisory committees and expert panels around the world, including the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, the World Organisation for Animal Health, the European Food Safety Authority, the Animal and Plant Health Agency of United Kingdom (UK)’s Government, and the Animal Health Surveillance Governance Board for England and Wales, UK.

Professor Pfeiffer was listed among the top 2% of the world’s most highly cited scientists, according to metrics compiled by Stanford University in 2020 and 2021. He received the "President’s Award" at CityU in 2020, and the prestigious "Calvin W. Schwabe Award" given by the Association for Veterinary Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine in 2021 in recognition of his lifetime achievement in veterinary epidemiology and preventive medicine. He has co-authored 361 peer-reviewed publications, and has an Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) Web of Science (WoS) h-index of 52 and a Scopus h-index of 55. Since he joined CityU in 2016, he has received about HK$40 million in funding for research and consultancy on poultry and pig health both in Hong Kong and other countries in Asia.
