‘Swine fever outbreak prompts call to slaughter Hong Kong pigs separately from imported mainland Chinese livestock’

Prof. Dirk Pfeiffer (Chair Professor of One Health and Director of the Centre for Applied One Health Research and Policy Advice) said in an article in the South China Morning Post that “Hong Kong authorities needed to do their utmost to keep the virus out of the city given no cure or vaccine for it exists” and recommends the slaughter of local pigs in a different slaughterhouse from mainland Chinese pigs to prevent taking the infection back to the farms. There have been four outbreaks of the highly contagious swine disease on the mainland this month and Dr Howard Wong (Director for Professional Development) agreed that Hong Kong should be prepared as an outbreak of African swine fever in pork would be “a much bigger disrupter of communities than chickens”.
