Despite the advent of automated blood-cell analysers, blood smears still play an important role in the diagnosis of haematological disorders. But, you need a good quality blood smear before you can make a thorough haematological assessment. In the Practical Haematology Workshop, you will learn how to make a good blood smear and how to assess it. Under the guidance of Dr Allan Kessell, you will also learn how to assess blood smears with haematological abnormalities. Mastering this simple technique will help you improve your diagnostic skills and decision making abilities, especially when you need quick answers!

The aim of the workshop is 2 fold:

  1. To give practitioners some practical haematology skills that will allow the veterinarian to be able to assess the blood smear and validate or invalidate a set of in house haematology results, and
  2. Indicate when the veterinarian may need to send the blood sample to a pathology laboratory for specialist assessment.
