Colloquium: Discoveries by Nobel Laureates in Physics 2025: Macroscopic quantum mechanical tunnelling and energy quantization in an electric circuit

ABSTRACT

The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics honors three scientists for their groundbreaking research in "macroscopic quantum tunneling and energy quantization in an electric circuit." This talk will begin by exploring the foundational contributions of physicist Anthony Leggett, emphasizing his crucial role in transforming "Schrödinger's cat" from a mere thought experiment into a testable physical reality. It will also clarify the distinctions and interconnections between concepts such as macroscopic quantum tunneling and the Josephson effect.

The main section will provide a thorough analysis of the awarded experimental work, demonstrating how it confirms the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics within the macroscopic context of superconducting quantum devices. Finally, the presentation will broaden its scope to examine the research landscape inspired by this Nobel-winning achievement.

BIOGRAPHY

Prof. Io-Chun Hoi has been an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics at City University of Hong Kong since November 2021. He earned his B.S. and Ph.D. from the Electro-Physics Department at National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan and the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden, respectively. Following this, he conducted postdoctoral research with Prof. John M. Martinis, a recipient of the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics, at the University of California, Santa Barbara, USA. Prior to his current position, he served as both an assistant professor and later an associate professor at National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan. His research has garnered more than 4,500 citations, according to Google Scholar.
