City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) hosted its 2025 Principals’ Luncheon on 23 October under the theme “Innovating into Future Learning”. The event attracted over 150 guests, including nearly 120 principals, vice principals and teachers from about 110 secondary schools, who gathered with CityUHK management, faculty and students to exchange educational insights and learn how the University is advancing teaching and learning through innovation.
Professor Freddy Boey, President and University Distinguished Professor of CityUHK, welcomed the guests and shared CityUHK’s vision and initiatives in promoting innovative and internationalised learning. He emphasised the University’s longstanding commitment to a student-centred approach, focusing on nurturing future leaders with creativity and a global outlook.
“Education is not merely about knowledge transmission; it must continue to innovate,” said President Boey. “By leveraging technology and cross-disciplinary collaboration, we aim to create an inspiring learning experience that empowers our students to thrive in a rapidly changing world.”
President Boey also introduced the Institute of Future Learning, established in August this year, which integrates artificial intelligence and digital technology to drive pedagogical innovation and research development, strengthen cross-college collaboration and enhance the overall learning experience. He highlighted that one of this year’s top Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) scorers, who attained six 5** grades, enrolled in CityUHK’s Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine programme, one of the University's Flagship Programmes, demonstrating its commitment to nurturing outstanding students and promoting academic excellence.
Professor Lee Chun-sing, Provost and Deputy President of CityUHK, expressed his gratitude to the secondary education community for its long-standing support in helping students prepare for university admissions. Additionally, Professor Ray Cheung Chak-chung, Associate Provost (Digital Learning) and Director of the Institute of Future Learning, delivered a presentation titled “Innovating into Future Learning”, outlining how CityUHK is leveraging innovative technologies and digital tools to enhance teaching development.
Guests expressed strong interest in CityUHK’s new programmes and initiatives for the upcoming academic year. The University’s flagship programmes will expand to ten in the next academic year, supported by generous scholarships and overseas exchange subsidies of up to HK$500,000, offering students opportunities to study and intern at leading global universities, broadening their international outlook. In addition, the Direct Admission Joint Bachelor’s Degree Programme with Columbia University will be launched next year, enabling students to pursue studies in both Hong Kong and the U.S. and earn dual degrees upon graduation, further underscoring CityUHK’s strengths as a globally oriented university.
To foster dialogue between secondary schools and higher education, a panel discussion was moderated by Professor Steve Wong Hang, Associate Vice-President (Community Engagement). Three secondary school principals—Mr Liang Kwun-fan from ELCHK Lutheran Secondary School, Dr Suen Ka-chun from Po Leung Kuk Laws Foundation College, and Mr Kan Wai-hung from HKTA The Yuen Yuen Institute No.1 Secondary School— explored how close collaboration between universities and secondary schools can foster innovative teaching and learning and strengthen the development of future learning hubs.
The luncheon also featured a sharing session hosted by Professor Dannii Yeung Yuen-lan, Associate Provost (Student Life), during which three outstanding students who have received awards in different fields shared their CityUHK learning experiences, showcasing the University’s diverse and inspiring academic environment.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Professor Chan Chi-hou, Vice-President (Community Engagement), who expressed appreciation for the continued support from the secondary education community. The annual luncheon served as a valuable platform for information exchange, enabling secondary school principals and teachers to gain deeper insights into CityUHK’s latest developments and future education direction, and to provide meaningful guidance for their students’ academic planning.
