Have you already conceived some ideas to create a model or prototype but are still figuring out how to construct the parts and components with a high degree of accuracy and precision? Laser cutting and engraving can be the answer. You can utilize the Library’s laser cutter to shape your designs from different materials like wood, acrylic, paper, etc.

To become an eligible user of our Laser Cutting and Engraving service, you should attend this workshop and take a short hands-on test to obtain a certificate. Seats are on first-come, first-served basis, so register now!

Library Opening and Counter Service Hours Update - Semester B (including Revision & Examination Period) to Summer Term Break 2023/24

Partial Access Arrangement – External Users – Revision and Examination Period, Semester B 2023/24

Each year when the examination period is approaching, there will be a higher demand for study space in the Library. Therefore, during the Semester B Revision and Examination period, Partial Access Arrangement will be imposed whereby access to our Library by certain categories of external users will be limited to non-busy hours of the day only. Affected users include:

  • Holders of CityU Alumni Card with subscription of Alumni Library Services - Reader (those with reading privileges only)
  • JULAC Card Holders - Reader / Borrower (students only) from other UGC institutions
  • Reader's Card for Long-serving staff members and their spouses

If you need to borrow books, return books or collect recalled items during the affected period, please note the following:

  • Instead of borrowing books from us in person, you may consider using HKALL borrowing services or interlibrary loan services of your home library.
  • To return books, you may bring them to your home library and use the JULAC Book Return Service instead.
  • If you want to return books in person, please use the bookdrop located outside our Library. For books with accompanying fragile materials such as CD-ROMs, please return them to the slot for “MEDIA RETURN” drop box outside the Library.
  • To collect recalled items, you may come during the accessible time. If your schedule only allows you to come during the non-accessible time, you have to show your book pickup notice to the security guard in order to gain access into the Library.

LibKey Nomad is a browser extension that provides a convenient way for accessing articles that are subscribed by the library while you browse the internet including Wikipedia and other scholarly publisher websites.

Free Open Access Publishing through ‘Read and Publish’ Agreements with Publishers


Dear Colleagues,

The Library is pleased to announce the signing of “Read and Publish” agreements with the following publishers. These agreements incorporate open access (OA) publishing fees into journal subscription costs, enabling eligible CityU authors to publish open access free-of-charge in selected journals. This marks a significant stride towards advancing open access (OA) publishing at CityU.

Relocation of the CREATE! Makerspace

To improve the ventilation of the CREATE! Room, especially during the operation of the laser cutter/engraver, the Makerspace has now been relocated to the Library’s second floor. In addition to the existing hospital-grade air purifier, two new powerful range hoods have been installed to extract fumes from the laser cutter efficiently to open space. From now on, please visit the new venue to use 3D scanners and printers, the laser cutter, the physical computing kit, etc., or to attend our maker space workshops. The new and previous locations are illustrated in the floor plans below.

CityU Scholars – Training Workshops (via Zoom)

CityU Scholars is the University’s Integrated Research Information System for faculty members and research students to showcase their research output and achievement to the global audience through the public researcher profiles. Records collected in CityU Scholars will also be used by the University for reporting (e.g. the annual submission of research output to the RGC) and appraisal (e.g. the annual performance review) purposes. It is therefore important that our researchers learn how to manage their CityU Scholars accounts.

The Library is pleased to host the following training workshops on CityU Scholars. New faculty members and research students*, newly appointed Departmental Administrators, Trusted Users or any interested parties are welcome to attend.

We are pleased to announce that the Study Carrel - 119 (formerly known as Law Discussion Room) is now available to all eligible users. The room is located in the Purple Zone of the Library nearby the Law Collection. It accommodates a group of maximum 6 users.

To reserve the room via the campus-wide Resource Booker:

In view of the changing user behaviors and to better utilize the Library's resources, starting from 21 August 2023, the E-newspaper Viewing Station will be discontinued.

You may scan the QR code to enjoy 24/7 access to the Library’s subscribed e-newspapers and news databases with your own smart phone or computer devices.

Course Packs

In the coming semester, course instructors may want to provide students with printed or digital course packs containing copyrighted materials. It can be time-consuming to seek and obtain permission for using the copyrighted materials in course packs. Hong Kong Reprographic Rights Licensing Society (HKRRLS) grants CityU the right to legally copy and scan the contents of copyrighted published works licensed through HKRRLS for preparation of course packs by paying a license fee. The Library can assist the instructors in preparing the course packs to comply with the HKRRLS’s requirement.

The license fee will be paid by the department placing the request or by individual students taking the course. If the copyrighted materials are available online via the Library, instructors should provide links on Canvas for students to access the materials instead of producing course packs.

Publishing Open Access (OA) free of charge with CityU’s Transformative Agreements (2 Aug 2023)

We are pleased to inform you that the Library has committed to Transformative Agreements with the following publishers whereby our researchers can now publish open access free of charge in their journals upon fulfilment of certain requirements.

Besides, there are other open access publishing offers that the Library has secured from various publishers/societies which include MDPI, PNAS, RSC and SCOAP3. For full details, please visit the following LibGuide page.

Library User Survey 2023 (LibQUAL+®) - Survey Report

The Library carried out a survey on the quality of its services from March 15th to April 28th, 2023. The survey received an overwhelming response from current students, faculty, and staff. Over 2,600 library users participated in the survey, providing a diverse range of feedback on various aspects of the Library. Monthly Book Club

Join the book club hosted by An Yu, the Writer-in-Residence of the Department of English. This month’s pick is Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro. Copies of the book will be given out in the first meeting. For the first meeting, please bring along a book that you have read recently and would like to share.

We are delighted to let you know that Room P3312 is now relaunched as a Discussion Room, for users to carry out discussion, Zoom meetings and collaborative studies. Room P3312 (the Room) is located on the Library 3/F (near the Law Collection area).

Please be reminded that:

  • The Room can be accessed by all valid CityU Library users.
  • The opening hours of the Room are the same as Library’s opening hours.
  • Seats are available on a first-come-first serve basis.
  • Library users shall not leave any valuables unattended in the Room. The Library is not responsible for any loss of personal property.
  • Be considerate of others when using the Room. No food or drink are allowed.
  • The Room shall be kept clean and tidy all the time. Please dispose of trash properly.
  • Be gentle to the furniture and equipment.
  • All Library users must observe the Library Regulations.

Partial Access Arrangement - External Users - Revision and Examination Period, Semester B 2022/23

Each year when the examination period is approaching, there will be a higher demand for study space in the Library. Therefore, during the Semester B Revision and Examination period, Partial Access Arrangement will be imposed whereby access to our Library by certain categories of external users will be limited to non-busy hours of the day only. Affected users include:

  • Holders of CityU Alumni Card with subscription of Alumni Library Services - Reader (those with reading privileges only)
  • JULAC Card Holders - Reader / Borrower (students only) from other UGC institutions
  • Reader's Card for Long-serving staff members and their spouses

Normal access will resume from 9 May 2023 onwards.

# Only CityU staff members and students (including SCOPE smartcard holders) are permitted to stay beyond 11:00 pm on the University campus. External users will need to leave by 11:00 pm. Users staying behind may be subject to ID checks.

Notes to JULAC Card Holders - Borrower (students only) from other UGC institutions:

If you need to borrow books, return books or collect recalled items during the affected period, please note the following:

  • Instead of borrowing books from us in person, you may consider using HKALL borrowing services or interlibrary loan services of your home library.
  • To return books, you may bring them to your home library and use the JULAC Book Return Service instead.
  • If you want to return books in person, please use the bookdrop located outside our Library. For books with accompanying fragile materials such as CD-ROMs, please return them to the slot for “MEDIA RETURN” drop box outside the Library.
  • To collect recalled items, you may come during the accessible time. If your schedule only allows you to come during the non-accessible time, you have to show your book pickup notice to the security guard in order to gain access into the Library.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused to users concerned. All restrictions will be lifted and normal access will resume after the examination period. For affected users who have urgent research / academic needs to use our Library during the non-accessible period and for any enquiries, please contact us by email: lbasprs@cityu.edu.hk.

The launch of the Audio Recording and Mixing Studio

Situated in the Humanities Academy Group Study Room 1010, the Studio aims at providing a noise-free environment with state-of-the-art recording and mixing equipment and software for students and staff to develop projects and prepare teaching materials. The professional-grade audio system enables a one-stop and easy-to-operate user experience for making special sound effects, multi-sound source mixing, waveform editing, etc., to produce high-quality audio content, perform live streaming events, Podcast creation, etc.

Virtual Instruction and Reference Help Desk Available Now

As our commitment to continuously enhance user experience, the Library is pleased to offer virtual help desk service via Zoom in the Library.

A virtual help desk is set up at the Circulation Counter. After pressing the Start button, library staff will meet with you live and answer your questions about the library’s collections, services, and so forth. The service is available Monday – Friday, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm (except public holidays).

Come and try out this new library service, enjoy the convenience!

Wayfinding at your fingertips by using the new Smart City Walk (逍遙行) app

When you have to locate and reach for particular bookshelves, rooms, and facilities within the Library’s vast premises, sometimes the experience could be puzzling. Now, you can download the Smart City Walk app to your iOS or Android smartphones/devices and the app will guide you to desired spots with ease. There are more than 80 points of interest, such as study areas, facilities/equipment, bookshelves, washrooms, etc. available for location searching and route guiding. The Library’s third and second floor areas are included.
